5 ARRESTS AS SCHOOLKIDS & OTHERS SHUT DOWN LEAMINGTON SPA TOWN CENTRE

Leamington StWC | 20.03.2003 20:35

Amazing, inspiring scenes in Leamington Spa today as defiant schoolchildren inject energy and militancy into anti-war civil disobedience action.

Hundreds of demonstrators brought the centre of Leamington Spa to a standstill today, their numbers swelled by a large number of schoolkids who had bravely bunked school, most of them having been told that they would be expelled or suspended for it. The main shopping area was blocked three times in different places for a number of hours - the union jack and stars & stripes were burned like the shitrags they really are (almost provoking violence from passing morons), and the day came to a fantastic end when the local Shell garage was blockaded for a good long time into the bargain! The most exiting thing about the demo was the militancy of the schoolchildren - hundreds of them bunked off school and got in shit for it (letter-writing campaigns and demos at their schools will follow) and it was them who drove the action on the demo. We at Leamington Stop the War Coalition had been planning civil disobedience, but the kids took it much further and for much longer than we were planning - for most of the demo it was us following them, rather than the other way around! They even wanted to storm mcdonalds (there were too many police). They put us to shame - the police had clearly decided to let us have our little tantrum against the war without arrests but we ended up just taking the piss and they had to get vanloads of police in from surrounding towns to eventually arrest people. I had been really depressed what with the war & that but the demo today was just so uplifting it was incredible. middle england - we have your children! If all these kids stay this hardcore this country will see a revolution in about seven years - no shit. The children of Britain can see through the lies of this genocidal government & the State is sowing the seeds of its own destruction.

If you want to burn something, burn pictures of blair and bush. Don't burn our goddamn flags. Of course you are going to provoke people by burning their national emblems. Many people that might have otherwise supported the antiwar stance and who believe our nations shouldnt be represented by the likes of bush/blair are going to feel alienated by groups who protest by burning the union jack and the stars and stripes.

Don't overexcite yourself comrade.......

Good to see school age kids protesting in big numbers. But............. you are really are OTT if you think there'll be a revolution in 7 years time. Its spring, its sunny and they don't have to go school as well as being angry over the war.One issue doesn't make a revolution.
I'm proud of how these teenagers stand up to the government but don't expect them to follow whatever party line you're peddling !

Oldie..........

The Kids ae alright!

The biggest war criminal is Bush here in America. However the weakest war criminal is Blair. If you Brits keep this up long enough Blair will have to back down. I can't thank you enough!!

That revolution thing was a bit of a joke obviously - but these kids weren't just single issue - they were up for storming mcdonalds, they blockaded the shell petrol station shouting 'no blood for oil!' and they were even aware of the fact that shell is an animal rights target (they have loads of shares in huntingdon life sciences) these were some kickass kids, and you have to be encouraged surely. and by the way, i aint peddling no party line, i don't believe in party politricks, i was just incredibly encouraged by the action today and seeing first hand the incredible militancy being shown by schoolkids around the country.
the burning of the union jack was done next to a banner proclaiming 'ashamed to be british today' and sent a very powerful message. the british flag is a symbol of suffering, oppression and death for billions of people around the world, and if we want to stop wars like this then we have to break people's loyalty to it - we are not citizens, we are human beings just like the ones in iraq - that is what people need to realise, and hundreds of people chanting 'burn that flag!' in the middle of a normally quiet town like leamington is a good step towards this. there is no place fof patriotism in a peaceful world.
