Action Against Tindle Newspapers Censorship

Hamsters | 19.04.2003 15:35

The newspaper you are about to read is a direct response to a blatant threat to free speech in our country...

On the eve of the invasion of Iraq, Sir Ray Tindle (owner of over 100 publications) announced that his papers would censor any dissenting views about the invasion of Iraq. In response, this one-off independent paper was produced in Totnes and seeks to provide a forum for the issues currently being censored by the editors of newspapers owned by Sir Ray Tindle.

It fills the gap left by the censorship of the Totnes Times and concentrates on the issues of media control, censorship, patriotism and the activities of the peace movement. It also look at the concerns of those wishing to find a way to support the troops sent to the Gulf.

This project has been funded by donations. Needless to say, it is not cheap producing a paper and any further donations to help us to cover the costs would be most welcome.

The paper (titled the Troubled Times) is available to download here as PDF (just under 1mb)

Fantastic! wot a wicked idea

21.04.2003 00:31

The paper looks great. What a fantastic idea! Bet the Totnes Times is pissed off. You should make the paper
a regular thing, we really need some real media.

I especially love the letters page, how did you get those letters anyway? Hope there not made up.

I'd love to get hold of a few paper copies. Where can I get one?

Anyway, well done to all involved. Hope you're not out of pocket. If I had some money I'd send some but the student loan has me well in the red.

Emma

Troubled Times Available Here

21.04.2003 11:07

5,000 were printed...

500 are available at the London Activist Resource Center
500 are available at Kebele in Bristol.
100 are on there way to Schnews in Brighton.

100 have gone to Tavistock, Devon
100 to Moretonhampstead, Devon
100 to Chagford, Devon
100 to Buckfastliegh, Devon

There were about three thousand available in Totnes.
Around 300 were distributed in Totnes on the first day.

There about 600 still to be assigned to local areas such as Exeter, Plymouth, Kingsbridge, Ivybridge, Newton Abbot etc.

Don't let this be a one-off

21.04.2003 22:27

I picked up a copy in a restuarant in Totnes and I wanted to let you know that it is ace. You should seriously think about making this a regular publication, I am sure there is a demand.

There is a serious lack of independent media in this country and what you have done with the Troubled Times is a timely reminder that things can be different. The corporate media no longer have a total strangle hold thanks to the internet and other technologies that are now available to ordinary people.

Mainstream newspapers should take note, as a medium it has a bad reputation already and blatant censorship does not help. With so many other sources of information these days, newspaper could become a thing of the past. Perhaps it will be the independent media that breathes new life into print.

Well done, I look forward to issue two :-)

Cant find the damn paper

22.04.2003 12:18

I would love to download this paper but it seems to have dissapeared of the face of the earth. Censorship perhaps? I really want this paper now. Does anyone have an alternative place i can get this newspaper?

Dave

I've uploaded a smaller PDF version. The original one was almost 3mb and download seems to timeout. This new one is under 1mb.

The start of somthing?

22.04.2003 18:08

Can't agree more with Steven and Emma just don't really understand why there hasn't been more of this because let's face it, while the internet has been invaluable, it doesn't exactly reach the street. And, it's not just within the 'movement', that is highly politicised...I hate the media, always have, apart from childhood editions of 2000AD if that counts. I'm not talking about challenging the Sun, we'll watch it disappear...
