Racism and Fascism in the Uk.After the local Elections

Doit | 04.05.2003 20:53

The British National Party success in the local uk elections what it means and what can be done against it. There is a danger of underestimating the dangers presented by racist and fascist parties.

For Discussion. Racism and Fascism in the Uk.
Summary and suggested solutions
The present antiracist and antifascist solutions are inadequate. We need further open and honest discussions of a way foreward.Racist and fascist ideas need to be challenged. We need to start cleaning out or unions and presenting alternatives. New ideas and organisations are needed. We need to respond much faster to events and prove us self in both theory and action. This will not be easy.

The British National Party success in the local uk elections what it means and what can be done against it. There is a danger of underestimating the dangers presented by racist and fascist parties. There is also the prospect of over focusing on their success and becoming demoralised or depressed to the extent they walk to victory without a fight.
Local government elections are something of an anticlimax but the growth of the far right in the uk exposes the fallacy of multi-culturism.1O years after the murder of Stephen Lawrence we are no further foreword to justice. Lord Mcpherson who wrote the report dealing with institutionalised racism in the police force. Will not even now talk of the matter following death threats to himself and his family.

Race relations in the Uk were much influenced by the black struggles in the USA and state efforts to deal with discrimination. But the legislation lacked much power and the nature of the variety of problems and issues have been hidden. Some of the difficulties have been buffeted by the Council for Racial Equality. Others hidden by race relation agents, officers, equality officers, training cources. But reactionary powers are and have been alive and kicking.Fords would be a good example of an employer that has managed to discriminate for sometime even when there has been a black Secretary at the Transport and General Workers Union.

The gains for the BNP are the massive publicity generated inspire of their small size. As they want both legitimacy and by emerging as the opposition to Labour in Burnley they are beginning to get it. This provides a means of recruiting members and the chance to grow in size and confedience. They may push the Labour party and society even further right. This is not new as the National Front was able to expand rapidly in the 1970s.

The Anti Nazi league claim they smashed the fascist but the reality is that Thatcher came to power and it was union organisation that was damaged and the miners smashed. Without a conservative revival we can expect the racists and fascists to grow.Infact the problems are more severe1.Aftermath of the Iraq War 2.Islamic phobia3.Deterioration in Public Services4,Asylum and Refugee Issues.4Drug and gun crime5.A sense of community fragmentation and lack of trust6A material basis of worsening work conditions.
Money and support comes from France,Germany,America and strong links have been developed with racist and fascist groups in the uk. A certain amount of bomb making(Copeland)previous links with northern Ireland para-miltataries,including recruitment from the army, prison guards, police.A certain amount of intelligence gathering. Seizing the address books of lefties, computer discs and red baiting via Red Watch but also simple manual files of opponents.
The response from the left 1. Ignore it 2. Isolate the racists etc3.Physical Confrontation. In so far that the racism and fascism is open. The matter may becomes increasingly easier to deal with it ie direct discrimination can be challenged. But it also carries the danger of greater pollution and acceptance.
We should set ourselves small tasks such as becoming more aware. Better prepared and indeed better organised. We should be consciousness that some of the BNB support comes from real fear and social deprivation. That the established political parties have little to offer.

Our theory and our ideas should offer clear alternatives to encourage that maximum unity between black and white. We should not allow the ideas of Blair or Blunkett for that matter to go unchallenged. We are paying a heavy price for confused and misguided ideas. The cost may be higher if we do not improve.
