'Suicide bomber' family in court

dh | 09.05.2003 12:34

The Sharif family have been remanded in custody on trumped up charges relating to the trumped up Tel Aviv suicide bombing. Don't those passports instantly recovered by the IDF remind you of that hi-jacker passport so miraculously found atop the WTC rubble? And one a pacifist Sufi mystic?

Surely another cause to add to the massive demonstration that surely must occur if the MOD go ahead with their 'actively considered' Thanksgiving service re the invasion of Iraq

Bomb suspect's family in court

Sharif and Hanif are alleged to have carried out the attack
The wife, brother and sister of a British suicide bomb suspect have appeared before Bow Street Magistrates Court on terrorism charges.

Zahid Hussain Sharif, 46, Paveen Akthor Sharif, 35, and Tahari Shad Tabassum, 27, all of Derby, were denied bail and remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on 19 May.

The three were arrested following a bombing in Tel Aviv in Israel last month in which three people died.

Israeli officials believe the bombing at Mike's Bar was carried out by two Britons, Asif Muhammad Hanif, 21, and Omar Khan Sharif, 27.

Mr Sharif's wife Mrs Tabussum, 27, his brother Mr Hussain and his sister Ms Sharif have been charged under Section 38 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Suspect sought

This includes failure to disclose information about acts of terrorism, which carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment.

Ms Sharif has also been charged under section 62 of the Terrorism Act which covers aiding and abetting acts of terrorism overseas, with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

More than 50 people were also injured in the Tel Aviv blast which happened on 29 April.

Mr Hanif, from Hounslow, west London, died in the explosion while Mr Sharif is still being sought by Israeli police, who say he fled the bar after the bomb he was carrying failed to go off.

Police presence

Friday's proceedings were delayed so the defendants could consult legal representatives.

District Judge Timothy Workman said the case against them relied largely on information from e-mails.

Despite a large police presence in court, the three smiled and waved at family members, friends and supporters.

Mr Hussain and Ms Sharif were arrested at their homes, Mrs Tabussum in Nottingham.

Three other people arrested on 2 and 3 of May in Derbyshire and London have been released from police custody.

Do the crime must do the time

09.05.2003 13:09

It really is not Israel's fault that the murders carried their identification with them when the criminal act was perpetrated. It actually goes to show that the terrorists are learning that having legal documentation will get them through those all pervasive checkpoints to the locations they want to be at.

Because of the many years of repeated attacked victimizing Israeli civilians their authorities have become rather good at collecting evidence from these crimes and that includes damaged identification papers.

That should a new lesson to the planners that the next time they send out their followers to commit murder they should be carrying forged documents.

And damned lucky too....

The passports reproduced in the media show little or no sign of damage.
So one survived a bomb blast, (these guys carry bomb-proof wallets?) and the other guy just happens to carelessly drop his at the scene,as well.
How fortuitous - for the IDF,for barroom bigot Blunkett and his biometric passports/ID cards, for Mossad to give them an excuse to send agents into the UK,thus ensuring a 'terrorist incident' will happen in Britain sooner rather than later

Study the facts

09.05.2003 13:52

If you were more familiar with the facts "dh" then you would know that the Israeli security guard that was holding the active bomber survived and is already out of the hospital. Knowing this fact its not unreasonable to assume that a passport in a jacket pocket might also survive with its contents intact. When one looks at bomb blasts its rather amazing what is damaged and what is not. Remember that paper bends and floats and is likely to be push away while stiff and rigid items will be broken by the shock wave.

The other terrorist was grabbed and held briefly by by-standers by he pulled out of his coat that they were holding and he ran off. I remember all the times that I have traveled and worn a coat. I found it easier and more comfortable to keep my papers in the coat pocket rather than pants pocket. I did this most often when I knew I would have to pull out those papers often.

If you go to the International Solidarity Movement's web site they recommend to their activists to keep papers always at the ready to make it easier to present when request. It has been well established that these two murders and their trainers studied the material the ISM offered as part of their planning.

"dh" think and study the facts before you post so you don't make yourself look so stupid in the future.

dh is exactly the kind of 'contributor' that destroys what little credibility IndyMedia ever had.

fair points, but

" It has been well established that these two murders and their trainers studied the material the ISM offered as part of their planning."

Well, that's a new angle, after all the insinuations about the ISM of late. Although established by who? Are you referring to the publicised claim that the two bombers passed themselves off as peace activists to gain entry into the country? If so, have you not heard that anyone who makes such a declaration is put on the next plane back home? Maybe because the IDF is unable to deal with unarmed internationals.
