A comment on "experts" limitations
----------------------------------
Hi Klaus: A few sentences in Allan Frey's introduction to his highly insightful article "Cellular Phones: Are They Safe to Use" (posted on C.I.O. 26/5/03),on the proliferation of false premises marring a substantial amount of biological and other specialised forms of research of EMF bioeffects, have caused some consternation among fellow networkers on our issue.

The sentences in question are: "But can they [health policy decision makers] take action based on the biological data now available? I think not. In fact, I believe it would be unethical to use much of it to make public health decisions."

Initially, it might appear that Allan Frey is letting us down but when we read through his well substantiated arguments in support of these statements, we see how just/valid they are. It would appear indeed--just as he has written-- "unethical" to base sound public health policy on such research.

In fact what he points out in the body of his paper is in line with the quote from J. Burke's THE DAY THE UNIVERSE CHANGED (1985) that Dr. Neil Cherry selected to place under the title of his "A New Paradigm, the physical, biological and health effects of radiofrequency microwave radiation" (The abstract of this is online at www.neilcherry.com).

This quote reads: "Our frame of reference determines what we look at and how we look, and as a consequence, this determines what we find."

Though with greatly diminished elegance in phraseology, this was also the third point I made to the assembly at that COST281 workshop in mid-May: their specialised training in specific disciplines blinkered their vision and understanding of phenomena, although many of them were unaware of their limitations in arriving at any real facts or ultimate truths.

Cows At California Ranch Make Like Lemmings, Run Off Cliff

May 15, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO -- A dozen Holstein cows grazing in a field north of San Francisco suddenly decided to act like lemmings: they ran off a 50-foot cliff.

Motorists say they saw the cows cascade off the hilltop, with some of the bovines tumbling end-over-end down the slate-and-gravel cliff.

Marin Humane Society spokesman John Reese says the young heifers probably were spooked by a noise, or by a dog or some other animal.

The Marin County Sheriff's Department says a deputy euthanized two of the cows at the scene. The others were taken to their owners at Silveira Ranch and were checked by a veterinarian.

A ranch owner said cows will sometimes break fences, but not run off cliffs. She said something spooked them very badly

Young buck goes on store rampage
--------------------------------
 http://www.timesonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=8018694&BRD=2305&PAG=461&dept_id=478569&rfi=6

ROCHESTER - For the second time in six months, a deer burst through the entrance of a Rochester business and left behind damaged goods and a mess.

A young 100-pound buck went berserk inside American Home Furnishings on Wednesday, barreling through a glass-paned door at the store's Brighton Avenue entrance, and then eluded a pole-wielding police officer while galloping through both floors of the store and causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Ultimately, the antlerless deer left the store by crashing through a large window at the Adams Street entrance, then crossed the busy street and, seriously injured, headed north along Connecticut Avenue.

"It looks like we'll have plenty of furniture for our scratch-and-dent room," store co-owner Linda Corless said several hours later as she looked down at a group of coffee tables, each marred with hoof marks, deer hair and blood.

There also will be plenty of furniture for the trash heap, and hours of scrubbing bloodstains off walls and carpet throughout the building, she said. She planned to call her insurance company later Wednesday.

According to Rochester Area police, a neighboring business owner spotted two deer milling around outside the Brighton Avenue entrance of the furniture store around 10:30 a.m.

After the buck burst through the door, the other deer just ambled off down Brighton Avenue, police said.

No one was inside the store when the buck entered it. Linda Corless said her husband, co-owner Mark, were at a business meeting in Monaca at the time.

Linda Corless said that, based on the trail of blood, it appeared the deer hopped over a leather couch in the front of the store and headed to a back corner, where it wrinkled the linens and comforter on a king-sized bed and broke a glass end table. A pizza box-sized patch of blood stained the wall next to the bed. Then, she said, the deer headed upstairs, where it caused the most damage. It broke more than a dozen lamps and scuffed and gouged several tables, among other things.

Rochester Area police officer Frank Mercier, who arrived at the store a few minutes after the deer, said he tried, without success, to corral the deer with a dog pole before it broke out onto Adams Street. Within a minute, Mercier said, police received a call from a Connecticut Avenue resident who said a disoriented deer was running in circles between her and her neighbor's houses. Mercier said the deer was lying down and bleeding profusely when he arrived there. He put it down with one shot, and called the borough street department to pick up the carcass.

Rochester Area police have received numerous calls from area residents who have spotted deer in and around the borough during the past week. Mercer said several calls had been about two deer "just kind of hanging out" at the old Oriental Theater site, rolling around in puddles there.

Six months ago, a deer burst into Rochester's Giant Eagle and scampered around the store before it was corralled by meat-cutter Ron Schaffer and pinned down by employees until a game commission official arrived. That deer was driven to a field in neighboring Rochester Township and released.

EXXONMOBIL BUSTED BY GREENPEACE GLOBAL WARMING CRIMES UNIT
Global Headquarters Shut Down Day Before Annual Meeting
-----------------------------------------------------------
DALLAS, Tex. - Business at the international headquarters of the world's most powerful company ground to a halt this morning as the Greenpeace Global Warming Crimes Unit converged on ExxonMobil's compound in Irving, Texas. Some members of the Unit are positioned across the entrance while others have entered the building to serve a list of charges against the company. The move comes as ExxonMobil's Board of Directors and international executives attempt to gather from across the world for tomorrow's Annual General Meeting.

As of 7:45 AM (CDT), 15 members of the Global Warming Crimes Unit are secured to the main gates, where two police-style vans are parked across the entrance used by staff and management. More than 30 members of the Unit have entered the compound, fabled for its high security. Some members of the Unit, including a Baptist minister, are actually inside the building, while others are on the roof, holding a banner that brands the building a "global warming crime scene." Employees arriving to work are turning away.

James Moore of the Global Warming Crimes Unit said, "This is where ExxonMobil plots to sabotage all meaningful efforts to solve global warming. Within these walls, ExxonMobil executives fight to conduct business as usual while the catastrophe of global warming - which impacts millions of ordinary people - is completely ignored."

ExxonMobil stands accused of running a 10-year campaign of sabotage against international efforts to solve global warming. The company has used its influence and money to block agreements that would reduce global warming pollution. Recent figures show the company gives millions of dollars to ultra-conservative groups that aggressively lobby against action to protect our climate and direct President Bush's extreme energy policies.

The list of charges is accompanied by pages of evidence against the company. Copies of classified documents and letters demonstrate the unique role that ExxonMobil has played in sabotaging action on global warming, fraudulently misrepresenting the science, and lying to the American people.

"While 109 nations have signed the Kyoto Protocol to fight global warming, ExxonMobil has done all it can to ensure the United States sits on the sidelines," added Moore. "We will leave only when the company agrees to stop sabotaging international action on global warming. Meanwhile, everyone can help by refusing to buy gas from ExxonMobil."

Support Diversity and Openness in our Nation's Media

The Federal Communications Commission is reviewing a rule that would reportedly allow corporations to further increase their media ownership. Diversity of ideas and opinions are key to the functioning of a healthy, stable democracy. If a handful of corporations are able to control the media sources for the majority of Americans, this diversity may be threatened and lost.

Furthermore, despite the significant public interest in this issue, the Commission is meeting behind closed doors without public review or input from Congress on the actual rule.

It is critical that we preserve diversity and have public comment on an issue of this magnitude.

Plutonium launch protest in Florida
-----------------------------------
Good folks,

On June 6 and 25, NASA is planning to launch two Mars Rovers exploration vehicles from Kennedy Space Center with radioactive plutonium 238 aboard. These two launches are another step in a massive expansion of nuclear space devices to be launched from Florida.

As a response to these launches, Pax Christi Tampa Bay has organized the Red Alert Day to let the people of Florida know that NASA is putting them at risk and asking them to contact officials to oppose these launches. We have attached a press release which can be adapted for your group, and a two-sided flyer. These will give you more information about the launches and NASA's history with radioactive materials. Red Alert Day activities
could include:

- passing out the flyer at an activity you have already scheduled this week
- organizing a media event
- making copies to pass in a public place, or to friends, groups, etc.
- contacting the officials listed on the flyer this week
- using the information to write a letter to the editor

Pax Christi Tampa Bay is planning a vigil and leafletting this Saturday, May 31 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the corner of Beach Drive and 4th Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg (take the 375/Baywalk exit from I-275; it becomes 4th Street and forms a T at Beach Drive just south of the
Vinoy). Wear something red, if you can; we will leaflet the people walking to Taste of Pinellas event.
For more information: (727) 573-2935.

Please do what you can this week to stop these dangerous space launches.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Floridians To Protest NASA Launches Carrying Deadly Plutonium

NASA and the Department of Energy have acknowledged a 1 in 34 chance of a launch accident with likely release of deadly toxins. Contamination could affect millions of people and a large area as far away as Orlando.

(city), Florida ...On Saturday, May 31, 2003, Floridians will rally at (location) against two launches of Mars Exploration Rovers, from the Kennedy Space Center, carrying deadly toxins including plutonium. Protestors say NASA's Environmental Impact Statement has acknowledged the likelihood of releasing deadly toxins in case of an accident. The contamination could reach a 35-mile radius surrounding the Space Center.

Plutonium is an extremely hazardous poison due to its high radioactivity. According to the Center for Disease Control, plutonium generally stays in the body for decades and continues to expose the surrounding tissues to radiation. The Mars Rovers will be launched atop Delta II rockets and are scheduled for June 6 and June 25, 2003. In January 1997, a Delta II rocket without plutonium exploded on lift off. Residents as far away as 73 miles were asked to stay inside because of the toxins released.

As the space agency and the Pentagon increase the number of radioactive space missions, they dramatically increase the risk of a massive contamination of large portions of heavily populated areas of Florida.

People around the world have been protesting NASA's nuclear launches. Eight accidents using nuclear power have already occurred. In 1964 a U.S. military satellite with two pounds of plutonium fell back to earth, burned up on reentry and spread the nuclear payload globally. Some scientists believe that accident is a major reason for increased cancers. Today 34 nuclear reactor cores orbit the earth.

Pax Christi is joining with other Floridians to request that NASA delay the launches until safe alternatives to power the rockets are substituted. For more information, call 207-729-0517

Pax Christi Tampa Bay is the local branch of Pax Christi, the international Catholic movement for justice and peace. The organization has consultative status as a non-governmental organization at the United Nations and is active in over 30 countries.
