Syria's continued occupation of Lebanon

Jamie Phife | 29.05.2003 13:06

Syria has engaged in an illegal military occupation, not for self-defense purposes but for aggressive purposes, since 1975

The Syrian occupation of Lebanon began in 1975, under the guise of a Syrian armed intervention to quell a PLO-instigated Lebanese civil war, but it extended and deepened long after the PLO was driven out of Lebanon by Israel and free Lebanese forces between 1982 and 1985. On October 13, 1990, the Syrian occupation of Lebanon was completed when Syrian soldiers took over the Lebanese presidential palace at Baabda. "Since that fateful day, Lebanon has been run as a fully owned subsidiary of the Syrian regime," explains Muhammad Mugraby, an international lawyer and human rights advocate from Beirut. It is widely recognized that every government decision, every military initiative, every diplomatic move and every economic plan made by the Lebanese government is subject to Syrian veto - when it is not at Syrian behest to begin with. To this day, report Lebanese exiles living in the West, Christian Lebanese suffer intimidation, imprisonment and widespread discrimination by the Syrian puppet regime.

Syria has completely taken over Lebanon. It uses Lebanese territory to maintain its terrorist proxy army, the Hizbullah; it uses Lebanon for drug trafficking; it drains the resources of Lebanon for its own sake; it has installed a government to do its bidding; and it uses police state tactics to crush opposition. Yet, for all this, there are but three United Nations resolutions that can be construed to call for an end to the Syrian occupation of Lebanon.

Why are there no Road Maps for ending the Syrian occupation of Lebanon?

Because

29.05.2003 14:00

the USA would prefer to bomb Syria into line than constantly
protect it with peace plans and billions of dollars in aid.

When it suits

29.05.2003 15:08

Could it be that Syria is not an American pal so therefore no one really gives a fuck as its not really a fashionable country to protest against. How can you get anti American frenzy against someone who is not associated with America. Syria is not a democracy either so not really a fashionable country to protest against whilst Israel is. Oil?!?!? What the hell ru on about? Take off the anti american shades and look for yourself nimwad

Western Sahara

29.05.2003 15:12

Morocco's also occupying Western Sahara but the United States has provided military, economic, and diplomatic support for Morocco’s war effort. Off a website I found on google:

"Spain had promised the country independence, but pressure from Morocco and the U.S. forced the Spanish government, in the midst of its own delicate transition to democratic rule, to capitulate. The U.S. was concerned about the prospects of an independent Western Sahara under the Polisario Front, the left-leaning independence movement, and also wished to boost the political fortunes of Morocco’s pro-Western monarch, King Hassan II.

Moroccan forces invaded the territory, but initially suffered heavy losses to the Polisario. Mauritania was defeated outright and withdrew. By 1987, however, due in large part to large-scale American military support, Morocco succeeded in conquering virtually the entire territory, including the former Mauritanian sector. The U.S. blocked enforcement of the 1975 UN Security Council resolution demanding Morocco’s withdrawal and recognizing Western Sahara’s right to national self-determination. The country remains occupied today, with most of the indigenous population, known as Sahrawis, exiled in refugee camps in neighboring Algeria.

There has been a cease-fire in effect since 1991, but the promised UN-supervised referendum on the fate of the territory has yet to take place."

I'm not trying to excuse Syria's occupation of Lebanon with this, and the Syrians are not exactly nice people, but as I think you're trying to point out the hypocrisy in going on about Palestine/Israel but not Lebanon/Syria, I'm pointing out some extra hypocrisy on the other side. Israel also terrorised and invaded Lebanon for a long while remember.

Why do not you wake up

29.05.2003 15:20

Labanon is part of Syria, like Kuwiat is part of Iraq. All 22 countries from Maracco (of casablanka rercently) to Saudia Arabia (of Rayid recently) including occupied Palestine in it entirety are called the Arab World. The majority of the Arab World are Arab and nobody looks down at the others. The Arab World is the heart of the Muslim World this is why it is being targetted by the white and the jews and the freemasons. Islam is not the religion of only the mosques and you forgget what you have been told outside, like the "christian" world of the west where morality means nothing. Also, by the virtue of humans being slaves to only the creator this means UK/USA/jews/freemasons/France/Russia and even china and the rest of the evil powers has no authority over us. Therefore the jungle law which is currently controlling the world will be demolished by us not by the faken communists (their actions in Bosnia and Afganistan and Chechnia ..etc speaks volumes of their savagery).

Labanon like Kuwait has been split from Syria after the Syrians has smelt rats after their alliance with the French/British during the first "world war". We in Iraq know who you are so we fought you all along and God willing we will liberate our country from you soon, we will not stop there this time, just wait and see. Mean while to reduce further suffering try to liberate yourselves from the Freemasions (like your PM who is dirtying iraq today) and the jews.

Dear Mr Racist

29.05.2003 15:49

Hello.. i'm not sure if your sane or not... i'm certainly doubting it. If ur from Iraq.. lets turn back the clock a couple of weeks if you were to dis ur government then Bang ur dead. Now nothing.. maybe a clip round the ear. Which to be totally honest I think u deserve for being and ungratefull pig. If the West is after your oil YOU the people have the power to stop it by protest etc etc. Before you didn't so even though you MIGHT not have wanted the West to come they came (maybe for the wrong reasons) and although things might be bad they are a hell of a lot better than they were before. BUT the fact that your a racist pig and people have died for you makes me kind of sad. Islam is THE most imperialist religion there is! The Otterman empire? What you maybe need to do is realise that you have been brainwashed into hating Jews perhaps through your own ignorance I don't know. Do you realise that in the UK we fund and support THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of Muslims through our taxes. For fucks sake we even support Muslims who declare death to Westeners (whilst they pick up Western money). Hell some muslims here even state they will not rest till the White Flag of Islam is flying over Downing Street and we still support them through our health system etc etc. Why do we do this? Because you little prick it is human nature to want to help another human being. Perhaps you should be reminded of this whilst you sprout you racist bull about Jews etc. Of course if you were offered a nice home in English suberbia with a nice little 180 a week on benefits you would turn it down wouldn't you? Cos remember that money would have come from Freemasons and Jews..

Anti Jaafer

nonsense on stilts

29.05.2003 16:56

Protesters in Iraq now get 'a clip round the ear' do they? You've really been paying attention..

As for 'they come over here stealing our benefits' yeah right and every asylum seeker gets a free Porsche too. You'd cross half the world for £37 a week, would you?

kurious

nobody is more racist than the jews

29.05.2003 16:59

The original article was about Lebanon and yes it is part of Syria like the entire of Palestine is part of the Arab and the Muslim World ..etc just because the current maps of the world exist as it is does not mean it is right,so is winning the war does not make it right. You the jews and the white dogs will pay the price of all of this death and destruction even if you go to the moon.

The white here has participated in the biggest demonstaration against the war but still the war went on. If this is the begining of the awakening of the white people it is a welcomed move although it is a very late one. Where it is now? Do they accept the occupation of iraq or is it a matter we do nothing because it will change nothing or is it we have done our (useless) bit? Which one where is the rejection to what is going on? How many people are reading this website or other uncensored news? Why they are not acting about it? we do not want there, infact nobody ever wanted you in Iraq,Palestine or anywhere else? Which country wanted you murdering theives, which country wants you now?can you name one country you filth? On top of all of your immorality you stuff plastics in your private parts and you want us to regard you as humans.

Who is feeding who; our stolen oil and the rest of the world's raw materils and our intelluctuals and your inflated currencies and the slaves and the rest of imperilisms and the destruction of any movement and country which tries to put you in your place; the dustbin of humanity.look at GM food who will manafucture some thing "good" only to be bought from him/her? USA

As far as the jews save your corcodile tears, even the bbc have prodcasted that panoramea program about the neo conservatives, look at the website of that programme and look at the profiles of those criminals, the vast majority are jews. But the programme was late and why it did not mention the women working in the whitehouse as an "Israely" intelligent officer is because the bbc is the bbc.

Islam can not be a racist religion because it is based on ideology not race like your heavily edited religion.

As far as Iraq is concerned the situation is not better than it was because the country is occupied by the troops and the spies of the anglo/american/jewish filth, you can see that next to nobody and contrary to what the media was pumping of the iraqi will welcome your troops, next to nobody has welcomed them and you. So while the illegaly changed Iraqi government has committed crimes against some iraqi people, these crimes are nothing compared with the crimes of the west/russians/jews/serbs. Even just to keep it simple, in iraq the sanctions has killed more than one million iraqis and heavily damaged the iraqi economy and up to 2 million iraqis have fled this grave misjustice. So, even ignoring your criminal history and even reality why shall we be happy? Iraq was up and runing up to the invasion so fuck off out nobody needs you there you blood suckers.

!!!!!

29.05.2003 17:17

Why the hell is there so much racism on indymedia????? It makes no difference whether someone is Jewish or not, and when people point out who and who not is Jewish its always because they believe the anti-semitic lie that Jews are all working together in a big conspiracy. The Bush administration actually has far less Jewish people in it than previous administrations, and so anti-semites are having to go down to lower levels of the administration to find Jewish people. And look at the 'Jewish influence' in Blair's government- Jack Straw's grandfather was Jewish and someone else is Jewish- therefore Jews control our government!!! Most of the US Jewish community is Democrat, and there are many anti-war/anti-occupation/anti-Zionist Jewish organisations. Similarly, the stuff about terrorist Muslims living it up on welfare benefits is also bullshit. Asylum seekers get very small amounts of money, and are sometimes given shitholes to live in by the government. There are 3/4 million empty houses in Britain (I think, or it might be England or something), if you have a problem with not having a house take it up with them not asylum seekers living in shitholes! Also something about white people 'waking up'- our rulers are the scumbags, not white poeple in general, and its stupid and idiotic to clump together rulers who are white and all white people. Its also stupid to say that white people are responsible for black slavery, genocide of Native Americans etc. White people's RULERS in the past were responsible for these, just like its stupid to accuse Turkish people of being responsible for the genocide of Armenians.

IndyMedia is an anti-racist place so I really don't see why racists come here- you should go find a racist forum or something.

Arabs think the whole world belong to them

29.05.2003 20:41

Lebanon is not part of Syria,it's a Cnaanite land of the Phoenicians occupied by Arabs.

Iraq doesn't belong to the Arabs. There are 5 Million Assyrians in the world and they should establish an independent Assyrian state in North Iraq.

North Africa doesn't belong to the Arabs. It's the land of the various Berber peoples.

Sudan doesn't belong to the Arabs. It's the land of Black Christians and animists and various Cushitic tribes.

Egypt is certainly not an Arab land. The Copts are the descendants of the Ancient Egyptians and they should live freely in their land without Arabs ruling over them and harassing them.

Just take a look at a list of Afro-Asiatic and Semitic languages and see that there were many peoples living in the Middle East in the past, but the Arabs have occupied their lands, ethnically cleansed them and forced them to become Arabs and Muslims through Arabization.

The Jews are the only native people who have managed to survive the Arab onslaught, and that's why you are obsessed with them.

jaafer is a wanker

30.05.2003 05:05

The problem is, people like jaafer are the leaders of syria, iran, and fundamentalist groups that are just plain out of their mind. He's not "normal" as per the average normal educated sane nice person in London or New York or any regular place. He's out of his mind, and this is reflected in his opinions. The problem is, it's people like jaafer who Israel and the west have to deal with, and it's pretty damn hard to do.

Jaafer, like all nutty people, probably doesn't even know that he's insane. That's the problem.

Hello

get a life zionazis

30.05.2003 08:06

Perhaps the writer of the article prefered the Israeli occupation of Lebanon that caused the deaths of 100,000 people? Does he remember what happened in Qana, the UN refugee camp that was shelled by the zionist Jews not so long ago, murdering hundreds of civilians and many UN staff? Or perhaps he is as one person rightly pointed out, a phalange thug who is in bed with the zio-nazis? After all, the aim of the zionist occupation of Lebanon was to install a right wing christian government that would do its bidding. That would have pleased the author tremondously. His hero is probably Pierre Jemayael or another phalange mass murderer who killed thousands of Palestinian women and children in Sabra and Shatila. The zionist occupation failed the lebanese formed a resistance group called Hezbollah that kicked their racist fascist a**es all the way back to tel aviv. As for Lebanese people being not Arabs, well following on in his demented logic, Britain therefore belongs to the Celts and Vikings.

Selective memories

30.05.2003 09:08

My dad was in the Israeli army in 1982, and he says that when they went into Lebanon, the Lebanese welcomed them at first. He says that the women in the fields used to run out and give them flowers and olives. He says they were seen as liberators, to sort out the Palestinians and Syrians ruining the country. Don't get him wrong; nobody hates Ariel Sharon more than my dad, he said he was an idiot to stay there for 17 years after the war had ended, and Israel staying there gave an excuse for Hizbullah etc. to gain popular support, and thousands of people, including several hundred Israelis, were killed for no good reason during those years. But still, Syria's occupation, which has been longer (its still going on) and more brutal (Horma!)than Israel's ever was, is getting a disproportionately smaller response from the international community than it should.

just a thought

30.05.2003 09:53

Could it be that BOTH the Israeli occupation of Palestine AND the Syrian occupation of Lebanon are wrong?

Could it be that BOTH anti-Arab AND anti-Jewish racism are wrong?

Could the Pope be Catholic?
