Spies 'fuelled Iraq arms row' Rogue elements within the
intelligence services have been blamed by a senior
minister for briefing against the government about the weapons threat posed by
Iraq.

The Leader of the Commons, Dr
John Reid, said journalists were
fed false information which
accused Tony Blair of
exaggerating the size of Saddam Hussein's arsenal.

This fresh development comes as the prime minister prepares
to answer questions in the Commons on the lack of weapons
of mass destruction (WMD) found in Iraq since the war.

Speaking to the Times, Dr Reid said spies told journalists
Downing Street had doctored the reports to strengthen the
case for war against Iraq.

The Tories' shadow foreign
secretary Michael Ancram
criticised Dr Reid's "silly
remarks" saying they would
"increase the wrangling" over
the issue rather than providing
the full and swift answers
needed from the prime minister.

On Tuesday it was announced an influential group of MPs is
set to scrutinise the government's decision to go to war with
Iraq.

'Skulduggery'

The Foreign Affairs Select committee will focus on the way
intelligence information over Iraq's weapons was presented by
Mr Blair's administration.

The prime minister is also expected to announce on
Wednesday that Parliament's Intelligence and Security
Committee will investigate the issue of Iraq's WMD.

Dr Reid told the Times: "There
have been uncorroborated
briefings by a potentially rogue
element - or indeed rogue
elements - in the intelligence
services.

"I find it difficult to grasp why
this should be believed against
the word of the British Prime
Minister and the head of the
Joint Intelligence Committee."

Hilary Armstrong, the
government chief whip, is also quoted by the paper as saying
"skulduggery" was at work in the intelligence services, and
acting against ministers.

This fresh twist to the row over Iraq's WMD could further fuel
calls for a full public inquiry, which the Liberal Democrats are
expected to urge on Wednesday.

Closed doors

That has so far been rejected by Downing Street, but the
pressure was increased by the US Congress decision to
investigate the intelligence on Iraq arms. Its hearings will be
transmitted on live TV.

In the UK, the Intelligence and Security Committee inquiry
would take place behind closed doors.

Mr Blair has denied accusations
that intelligence information
was doctored, insisting he
stands "100%" by the evidence
shown to the public about
Iraq's alleged weapons
programmes.

Journalists had claimed
intelligence sources said the
dossier published in September
had been "sexed up" by
Downing Street.

The prime minister is to make a Commons statement about
the weekend's G8 summit in Evian, which was dominated by
the issue of WMD.

Agenda

04.06.2003 08:39

Jack Straw and Geoff Hoon both declared the discovery or existence of banned weapons was irrelevant, prior to the outbreak of war. Why is the media making an issue out of it now? We always knew the reason for war was a lie - but the coalition got rid of a tyrant, "liberated" Iraq and feel damn proud of their achievement, so why isn’t the pro-war press singing their praises? They got what they wanted, oil! This can only be a ploy to oust Tony and bring the corrupt and sleezy Tories back to power.

Mr. Bilderberg

WMD, where the hell are they?

'Realist' once again demonstrates his 'other worldism'. If thousands of troops searching a sanction-ravaged land can find no trace of WMD, which trained weapons inspectors also failed to identify after weeks of searching, then the conclusion has to be that they are a fantasy. WMD were an excuse for an invasion of an oil-rich country to feed the greed of American capitalism, and about the US demontrating its ability to do what the hell it likes in the world.
Unrealist just blethers on yet again - a sad person in need of a brain transplant. The organ presently occupying its skull is patently a waste of space, or in it.

PS re WMD

Inaccuracy:

Weapons inpectors were withdrawn prior to US/UK bombing raids - they were not booted out.

Perhaps realist should apply for the looming vacancy in No 10 - his truthtwisting style seems apt for the post!

Sad

04.06.2003 09:31

It is sad, but there are reactionary forces - lets call them 'the establishment' - that will never be happy with "a red" in power.

The history of the labour movements tenure at the top of the 'democratic' side of government (admittedly the least important part of our[sic] ruling system) is littered with the betrayal of these would be servants of the crown.

The fact that this time the "reds" have spent most of their time and efforts in doing their masters bidding has made not a blind bit of difference to their eventual fate. When push comes to shove their blood ain't blue enough.

It would be comical - watching as the apparatus of state pulls down these presumptious oiks - if it weren't for the fact that the 'official' opposition are a bunch of dazed clowns themselves. How the blairites must be seething ... 'but we did every thing we were asked why get rid of us master' ...

... if only they had spent their time fulfilling the needs of the people, perhaps I might have some sympathy for them. But no, the toads jumped on cue, landing and crushing any attempt by the people to express and govern themselves ... thanks guys I won't forget it.

Perhaps I might vote green next time - or take out a polling station replete with blue rinse voters (just for a laugh you understand?) - but I sure as hell ain't putting any of MY eggs in that basket again ...

... be your own leaders you feeble burkes ... is still my favourite piece of graffitti ... autonomous techno-tribal collectives ... my favourite vision of the future.
