The Story of a Boy From Gaza

Amro Rahman Hasan is a 16 year old boy who lives in Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip. Amro is the oldest of 7 children, his father passed away a few months ago from heart disease and his mother is 8 months pregnant. The conditions these days in the Gaza Strip are hard due to the current crisis which is raging on. Amro must now take it upon himself to help support his pregnant mother and his 6 brothers and sisters. Amro was seeking a job for the past 3 months and was unsuccessful in finding one. Recently due to a good will gesture by the Israeli's Amro was allowed to apply for a work permit in Israel, as doing construction in the city of Ashkelon. He would barely make enough money to be able to ensure his families survival during these harsh times. He started work last week, and it was all going well. Due to the condition of his family, Amro was successful in striking a deal with his manager to have his check given to him once a week, opposed to how it was intended, to be given once every three weeks like all the other workers. His first check was due this coming Sunday, he needed the money to buy food and medicine for his family. Everything seemed as if it was starting to go well so far, for him it was like a brand new chapter in his life. He even asked permission from certain Israeli authorities, if he can have his mother who currently has a fever, to be allowed entry into Israel in order to receive medical attention But on June 8, all this was to change! When three men dressed in IDF uniform approached the soldiers in the Eretz checkpoint and opened fire, killing 4 and injuring 3. These men were opposed to any peace process, and all belonged to hardlined radical extreme groups. Due to this attack the IDF closed off the Gaza strip, and restricting all Palestinian residents from entering into Israel. This was a tremendous blow to Amro and his family, since this was the day he was suppose to go to work and receive his check. He is now held up inside Gaza and cant get out, and he does not know for how long. Due to those hardlined extremists whose main goal was to derail the peace process, now thousands of their own people are suffering and became re-confined to the Gaza Strip again. Amro’s pregnant mother had to be sent to the hospital today due to that fever she had, having her receive access into Israel wasn’t going to happen now. Amro this week for the first time started to understand why Israeli’s are sent out to his borders and set up check points. He realized that they fear for their lives, since militants would take advantage of any chance to enter into Israel and launch attacks. So that is why him and his family are forced to suffer, Amro was hoping that the peace process would change the conditions, but now he gives up all hope.
