The Holocaust is considered a 'tragedy', so would the deaths of thousands of innocent Iraqis be considered a tragedy or merely a statistic?

That says it all really doesn't it? The sheer reality of the human condition to be able to turn one death into a tragedy and a million deaths into a statistic.... so the question must be asked... The Holocaust. Tragedy? Or statistic? American History books would have you believe it was the single most horrific tragedy ever to occur in the history of the world.

So by the same token, would not the deaths of the ten thousand innocent Iraqi civilians be considered a tragedy as well? Or will they be written down as a statistic, because after all history is written by the victors. And as we all know, the victor in this Iraq "Liberation" war were the Americans. Only time will tell.

...between the holocaust and the iraq war (apart from the difference in numbers) is that whilst Hitler killed Jews (and Gypsies and gays and disabled people) out of sheer hatred, the US (and UK) killed Iraqis out of cold indifference. It's not that they wanted them dead - more like they didn't give a shit either way and those people were in the way. They say the deaths were an accident - well up to a point they were, but they knew full well that lots of their bombs would miss their targets and land on people's houses instead, which wasn't the intention but they knew full well that it would happen and they didn't really take steps to avoid it.

This thread makes me angry!

What about all hundreds of thousands of people murdered and tortured under Saddam's brutal regime! Didn't their death and suffering justify the war? Saddam was a burtal inhuman butcher, now thanks to the allies he is gone and can no longer oppress his people!

Brutal inhuman butchers equally aptly describes the Bush and Blair regimes, as well as other similar Western regimes, and the marines and other military personnel who paticipated willingly and with full accountability,who are tasked by their literally inhuman and hidden masters,in creating a Saddamesque global regime whatever the cost in human life and misery. You will note, soldier, that Saddam was spirited away like Osama before him.

Not just American. History books from practically every nation, barring those in the Arab world, correctly describe the Holocaust as the single most horrific tragedy ever to occur in the history of the world.

The Nazi Holocaust was a black period in mankind's history, a really horrible event which resulted in the murder of 10 million people, including Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, and political critics.

However, there have been other such events in recent history, take, for example, the Armenian Genocide, a very little known event in World War 1 where 1.5 people were massacred at the hands of the Turkish goverment. Or the Vietnam War, carried out by the good old US of A, where unexploded ordiance and Agent Orange still affects the Vietmamese to this day. Or the 1994 Rwandan genocide, where ethinc Tutsis where killed in their thousands in a matter of days.

I could go on...
