Oxford Socialist Alliance goes online

Oxford SA | 04.09.2003 13:57 | Oxford

The Socialist Alliance was formed in order to bring together individuals and organisations determined to provide an alternative to the betrayals and disappointments of New Labour. The SA is focused on supporting the struggles of ordinary working class people against racism, war and exploitation.

KEY ISSUES

Occupation of Iraq

THE true cost of the US and Britain’s war in Iraq reveals itself everyday. Thousands of Iraqis continue to suffer as a result of occupation. There is a humanitarian disaster in the country with men, women and children dying because there is no food, water or medicines. This is the outcome we predicted. We always said the war was not about weapons of mass destruction (where are they?), or democracy but about oil and US military and economic interests. The war was wrong before it started. It was wrong while it was being waged. It is now wrong for US and British troops to be stationed in Iraq. The occupation should end and Britain and the US should get out the Middle East.

School SATS

IF your children are sitting their SATS tests you will know the pressure they are under. Children in Britain are now the most tested in Europe. There is increasing evidence to show that this is having a damaging effect on them and their mental well-being. SATS have nothing to do with educational standards but everything to do with competition. They were introduced by the Tories to restrict what education pupils would get and undermine the comprehensive ethic - replacing it with an ethos of competition. Pupils who fail to achieve the ‘norms’ are labelled as failures at an early age. SATS has also led to increased competition between schools. Pupil scores are the currency of league tables, which influence parent’s choice of schools. The numbers of kids at a school affects the school budget. The size of the budget decides how many staff, and other resources are provided. The inevitable result is an increasingly divided system, where the 'best' schools get the lion's share of resources, while schools in poor areas suffer. The teachers union, the NUT, are going to boycott SATS exams next year. We fully support the NUT decision. We want well-funded schools for all – not selection, inequality and the constant testing of pupils.

Housing

Affordable housing remains a burning issue in Oxford. High rents, extortionate house prices, cuts in services to Council properties, poor quality student accommodation.....

In line with New Labours national attack on Council housing Oxford tenants are now being asked to pay for their own repairs and the repair budget is being slashed. So rents are being put up, housing support services are being cut, things can only get better? What a cheek!

The Oxford Socialist Alliance is committed to defeating New Labours drive to privatise Council Housing and is strongly committed to the Defend Council Housing Campaign. Through this campaign it is hoped that privatisation and the 'daylight robbery' practice of using council rents for everything but investment in housing, can be defeated and a broader campaign for affordable housing established.

that's fine but....

remember indymedia has guidelines such as:

Hierarchy : The newswire is designed to generate a news resource, not a notice-board for political parties or any other hierarchically structured organisation.

so please do not use it as such, thanks.

a fine line

Consistent???

04.09.2003 19:56

I think that above comment by "a fine line" is an unnecessary provocation which is obviously designed to "bait" Socialist Alliance supporters.

It is also a just a little bit sanctimonious and manifestly hypocritical. UK Indymedia is absolutely inconsistent in its application of its "editorial guidelines".

How many time-wasting, unprovoked anti-SWP diatribes have there been on Uk Indymdeia in the past months, written by loopy anarchists/left-liberals, islamophobes etc. without so much as a word about not using indymedia as a "political noticeboad".

POLITICAL CRAP?

04.09.2003 20:35

Perhaps it is different in Oxford.

There was a Welsh Socialist Alliance set up largely to prevent the leftie parties all fighting against each other in the same seats, better to fight different seats to spread the propaganda more widely. Sensible.

But it ended up that WSA was abandoned by all the political groups except the SWP.

WSA told people that when there was no WSA candidate, they should vote Labour. That was also the policy of the SWP. To me that demonstrated either bigotry or political incompetence. Probably both.

The building of big lies that win elections is now the Labour expertise. At least one lie put out by the SWP in Wales suggests they are the running dogs of the Fascists who now control the Labour Party.

It does not really matter, "an honest man will not last long in politics". Voters are rejecting the whole corrupt system. Thatcherite New Labour is going down the drain, and the LibDems are not shaping up. Will the Tories spring a surprise and steal old Labour clothes, send them to the cleaners, and come out determined to make an independent UK able to defend itself against all comers? Able to feed itself, and have its own long term sustainable equitable economy independent of the coming international economic chaos?

The key word in all that is sustainable. Go look up "Convergence and Contraction". Work out what has to be done from there.

Editorial Guidlines violation - please delete

04.09.2003 23:32

This article quite clearly breaks the editorial guidlines:
"Hierarchy : The newswire is designed to generate a news resource, not a notice-board for political parties or any other hierarchically structured organization."

Why on earth is it still here?
The SA is a political party, and extremely hierarchical and undemocratic, and yet they're using IMC as a noticeboard. I think this should be stopped now before they get their foot in the door.

And Bill, anarchists are not a political party OR a hierarchically-structured organisation, duh...

Point of information

04.09.2003 23:35

Point is that most of the anti-SWP postings on here haven't been by loopy anarchos or left liberals, but by pissed off non-SWP members of the Socialist Alliance, tired of being shafted.

Just thought you should know....
