Defence Industry Conference

Paulie T | 12.09.2003 09:14 | Anti-militarism | London

Defence Industry Conference in October - shall we go along to say hello?

Second Defence Industry Conference - The Economist and Jane's Information Group

21 October 2003, Queen Elizabeth II, Westminster, London

Sponsored by: QinetiQ

The path to the future

Following on from the Iraq conflict the defence industry is facing a challenging time. There is a need for the defence industry to evolve, with much weight being put on the importance of partnerships and relationships around the world. This event will bring together senior industry executives and influential defence policy makers with the aim to not only see how to survive the future, but also how to shape it.

Yes this must be a definite protest!

12.09.2003 09:24

There must definitly be a protest there. It is in central London as well so loads more people will attend than traveled to Canning Town for the anti-arms fair protests. Lets inform the Stop The War Coalition of this and make it a massive demo!

Rockwell

Why?

12.09.2003 09:44

Why should we need to inform the STWC? We proved we don't need a bunch of Trots this week and on many occassions before hand. I prefer direct action to ponsy placard waving.

Arthur

Because the STWC can mobilies massive numbers of people

12.09.2003 09:55

If the National Stop The War Coalition had given full support and backing to the anti-dsei protests then they would have been many, many times bigger and we would have been able to shut down the arms fair. The Stop The War Coalition was able to mobilise over 500,000 people for their biggest anti-war demo. If they could have mobilised only 5 per cent of that number for the anti-Dsei protests then we would have easily shut it down!

Rockwell

Trots as DESi

12.09.2003 11:53

Arthur:

They were a few trots at DESi, in the form of GR, and they did a bit, not a massive amount but a bit - which was welcome.

As informing STWC about a proposed DEMO: they read this site, and lots of tis members do, so they can vote with their feet.

STWC are more interested in being in control of theri pown demos and wouldn't normall officially support others. This is backward and reactionary of course, but that's what happens if you have an unacountable leadership working for their own personal interests, and not for the whole movement. But these sort of organisations dissapear because the membership/supporters realsie what is going on, and leave.

This is a shame but a fact.

glad someone spotted this

12.09.2003 12:40

so it saves me having to do it !!! certainly, if the money-swilling arms peddlers can regroup so quickly, then so should we. you forgot to mention that ''cluster bombs'' paul beaver will be chairing the meeting. NOW, a word to our critical commentators; can we please, please stop this repuhgnant 'trot-bashing'. some of your remarks read like a transcript from a stalin show-trial, thus not very nice and, rather vindictive. in fact, the only radical party that sets out to enforce a pro-labour stance against other groups is the SWP. none of the others do, as far as im aware, and many trotskyist groups do not support labour at all. i know trotsky was perhaps a bit too harsh on the anarchists, but many modern-day ''trots'' would quietly admit that.

glad

In your own words you said "If the STWC had been involved.." etc,etc... Well they weren't were they, why? Because its not yet on their agenda! Serious bloody issues like this one are rarely covered by the SWP/STWC unless its big enough for them to recruit people. You mention the 2 million march...for a revolutionary party to be able to mass that amount of people on the streets of London and then everyone goes home in time for tea just sums them up. Useless. They are about ego's and hierarchies..nothing else. It's time people got off their backsides and stopped relying on outdated relics to organise for them...we can do it ourselves.

Arthur

just a few points:
one person who disagreed with the idea that had the stwc mobilised for dsei then it would/could have been closed.......a socialist worker paper seller, rathbone market 4.15 weds. afternoon.
dsei takes place every two years......the excel centre is a legitamate target between now and then.
over the next two years any or all of the exhibitors this years dsei will be a target for acts of randomness. we know who they are.
the arms industry should supercede oil as the primary target in the war against capitalism.
given that the armed forces will inevitably (today or tommorow) face the weapons of war sold this last week.......it shouldn't be too hard to get them on side.
viva la revolucion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nobody in particular
