a few thoughts on internet video

09.11.2003 16:21

If you update you windows media player it will work fine, if you are on another platform then you will probably have problems playing it – CD-ROM version out some point soon.

On the subject of online video codec compression:

The is no good solution – non of the non-corporate video codec’s work and won’t except for a tiny tecky minority work for the foreseeable future.

Of the corporate ones I used to use real as this was the underdog and is reasonably simple to create and upload but the latest realplayer software is a nightmare for advertising, spywear and stability.

QuickTime has never worked well for narrow band streaming and the support on PC’s (90% of users) and linex is some what flaky and non-standard. Apple as a company is even weares than Microsoft for its capitalist monopoly practices – the only differences is they spend all there marketing dollars to crate art snob value – its good to have compation in a capitalist market but I wouldn’t recommend people to get macs unless they have very basic needs or lots of money for support.

Then the is microcrap (soft) which acturely works really well as long as you acationaly install the updates.

So the is no-real alternative and microsort is the best of a bad bunch… if you are at all interested in non-geek people seeing your films then this (at the moment) is probably the way to go (:

Notes to the above:

* The is a nice haked and functional pieces of software (for PC’s) called “media player classic” this will play back Real/QuickTime/Microsoft its sweet because it undermines the lot of ad-supported crap that is the current only choices. And it works (:

* All our videos are available (MPG1 at VHS quality) on copyleft CD-ROM, we have 12 of them at the moment next one with this video on, out soon. But the isn’t any way to get them apart from word of mouth and hand to hand at the moment – some one needs to come into the office and organise a subscription system (it’s a DIYFS project).

* much of the geek projects for video alternatives are stuck in geek land and bear little scrutiny from a user or producers needs. Indymedia at the moment seams to be going in a similar direction – it’s a form of religious fundamentalism which has always been a part of progressive and revolutionary movement. It’s a re-accruing and thus very boring and disempowering theme. Hummmm….

Wonderful! We did a similar action in the USA last month...

09.11.2003 21:34

First off, great video. Very cool to see the action up close.

Secondly, I'm thrilled to see this, because my boyfriend and I did a similar action last month. On September 19th, Albright was signing books at a Barnes and Noble (corporate chain bookstore) in Georgetown, an up-scale neighborhood here in Washington, D.C., where we live. The two of us simply walked up to her as she was signing her newly released book, "Madam Secretary". I got right in her face and said:

"Albright - there's blood on your hands. Five hundred thousand children in Iraq are dead because of economic sanctions. Was it worth it?"

At this point, security whisked me away. But my boyfriend followed up behind me, and said, "Now you know why US troops aren't being greeted as liberators." As they dragged him away, he got in some comments about depleted uranium in Kosovo. Then, we left.

Anyhow, it wasn't so dramatic as your action, but as I watched it, I pictured Albright thinking, "Oh shit - not again!"
