Christian activist on trial

Paul Perkins | 21.11.2003 14:42

CAMSAW activist Paul Perkins, who attended Ridley Hall Theological College last
year, is in court at Mildenhall tomorrow for his part in the anti-war protests at
USAF Lakenheath earlier this year. The Christian youth and community worker was
arrested on February 3rd 2003 for obstructing 'Lord's Walk', the public highway
leading up to Gate 2 of the American airbase. Having taken nearly 10 months to come
to trial, the hearing coincides with the visit of US President George Bush to
London.

While President Bush has made statements about Britain's freedom of expression, Mr
Perkins will be defending himself for an act of conscience, in opposition to the
Iraq war which most of the public have come to see as a terrible failure,
culminating in the death of around 8,5001 innocent civilians, and continuing to cost
taxpayers in Britain £5 million a day2. He will be focusing on issues of human
rights in relation to his arrest, as well as the illegality of the war itself and
the presence of nuclear weapons at USAF Lakenheath.

The court case will proceed from 10am at Mildenhall Courthouse, Friday 21st
November, with Mr Perkins defending himself. IN a David and Goliath scenario, eight
police officers have been called by the Crown Prosecution Service, with 2 activists
appearing for the defence. Mr Perkins, 22, said 'I opposed the war because of my
faith and what I believe, and am determined to see this through. It has been a
challenge to defend myself in court but I am hopeful that I will be acquitted and my
protest accepted as a necessary part of life in a truly democratic country.
Everyone's tired of a government that never listens.'

Paul Perkins is contactable via e-mail on  youthsnafu@hotmail.com or mobile phone on
07870 665683, for further details or an immediate interview. Photographs of the
original action (in which 6 protestors were arrested for locking-on to each other on
Lord's Walk) and copies of Mr Perkins' defence proper for the trial are also
available. Journalists are invited to attend.
