A leading anti-capitalist website is under threat through lack of funds. Due to it immense popularity the amopunt of bandwidth used has dramaticly increased many times over since it was first launched way back in 1996. This website is a major resource for anarchists, leftists and greens. Fundraising ideas such benefit gigs, squat parties, or other help would be greatly appreciatted.

I currently fund the website out of my own pocket using web work for other sites to provide funding but at the current rate of increase in bandwidth I dont think I will be able to keep the website going for much longer. In order to keep the site an independant voice it recieves no advertising or sponsership from any companies. So please help out if you can. Any bands who would be willing to do benefit gigs for the site, or promotors who could put on squat parties would be appreciated greatly.

Just a quick disclaimer - the comment above didn't come from one of the enrager.net web collective - most of us are/have been long-term users of urban75, and we like the site.

I think we should show solidarity with all non-aligned independent media projects, cos if it's u75 today, it could be IMC tomorrow...

The site is more than just Mike it a whole community of hundreds of people. Many of the posters on that website also post on here and are activists within the anti-capitalist movement. The site is a major networking tool as well for activists, who use its bulletin boards to discuss actions such as Mayday and other important issues. The site is also not just for anarchists but for a whole range of people intersted in a wide variety of different things, so in mixing politics with music, sport, drugs and culture it has introduced loads of new people to our movement. Many of the posters on the boards who came to the site via the rave and club scene have become more political since posting on there and interacting with activists.

It is also wrong to say that Mike uses the site for self promotion. He has stuck to his principles and only done work for ethical organisations such as chartities. He has turned down lucrative offers from many companies to build websites for them because they are not ethical businesses.

So, Slocombe (self proclaimed head honcho of urban 75) is now begging for money to uphold his little empire. Doesnt Snickers (mars) pay him enough money? or has lambeth council put up the rent in his squalid, run down barrier block masonette? I'm not going to help this little hierarchical t*at to prop up his already over inflated ego some more. It is of my opinion that his behaviour over the last few years has be disgusting to put it mildly, many of his forum users constantly complain about his facist editorial policy. If so many people are using his website, then why is he begging here?

See above post from "steely". He probably posted *most* of the attacks above, but probably not all of them - but he does show a lot of personal knowledge about Mike Slocombe.

It's pretty obvious to anyone who'd even remotely familiar with u75 that the first article here was not written by Mike Slocombe. The style is totally different.

I wonder how many of the people who evidently *want* to believe that the editor of u75 is holding out the begging bowl, and are criticising him from their safe seats behind nice, anonymous little computers, have actually got off their fat arses and made some sort of difference? Seems to me that a lot of self-proclaimed "anarchists" are very happy to bitch about other people's efforts, but a bit slower actually to do anything themselves.

I have to say I am disgusted with many of the above comments, and it does smell of a troll attack.

OK so there may be criticisms of urban 75 but only a couple. There's also criticisms of indymedia, of enrager, etc etc.

I read and contribute to both indy and urban 75, as do many many people. Indy gives me raw news, while urban 75 has a much higher level of discussion and debate, after all it is mostly a community of discussion forums.

Debate on indy happens now and then, but mostly because of the unaccountable system of postings and because it was never designed to be a discussion forum it does not work for this purpose. Indeed most use of the comment feature on indy seems to be for contributers like many of the above to shout FUCK OFF at each other. If indymedia ever wanted to be an outreach tool for new ideas, movements or campaigns it fails most of the time because of the vitriol and bullshit that people sling at each other. Urban 75 provides one of the best places on the net to engage in discussion and debate.

I support Urban 75 100%

If indy or enrager needed help then the Urban 75 community would help, that's called solidarity, something many people seem to ignore. Of course people have a right to criticise, but equally I'm often worried by the authoritarian tone taken by many who claim to be anarchists, as if you don't beieve exactly their position then you are some kind of political traitor - it's utter madness!

Other new sites like enrager are fully welcomed as well - no site should try to be everything to everyone - diversity is best.

I don't know what the motivation of the original post was, it may have been genuine - although it was written as if from Mike, which it clearly wasn't. Note to poster, use a spellchecker - but some of the following posts are clearly intended to cause division.

Urban 75 does not have a party line. It is a discussion board used by people of many shades of opinion, from anarchists like myself, right across the board. Which is why I find it so valuable. If I wanted to be agreed with all the time, I'd talk to myself!

I doubt very much whether posts above criticising Mike come from actual anarchists. I think it is more likely a piss poor troll fest. Yawn.

Whoever is responsible, though, Mike provides an invaluable service, and does not deserve the vitriol above.
