Peace Not War Music and Arts Festival 12th 15 February

Peace Not War | 02.02.2004 16:50 | Anti-militarism | Culture | London

In February 12th, the Peace Not War Music and Arts Festival kicks off in London.

A year on from the Massive worldwide Peace demonstrations, this 'festival' really could be something for the UK Peace movement. It is a gathering for the whole spectrum of people who came out on the streets last year.

The diversity of Music, Speakers, Art, Films and Visuals demonstrates what a positive and dynamic movement we are. This event will celebrate and confirm the rich culture of the Peace movement while providing it with much needed funds.

100% of the profits will be plowed back into the Peace movement.

The 1st Peace Not War CD has already raised £45,000 for UK Peace groups. The money raised by this event will be used to produce the next wave of Peace Not War CDs - using tracks already contributed by over 300 artists. These CDs will be donated to Peace groups who can use the proceeds to further their work.

Through this process, the event hopes to generate £100,000 for UK Peace groups.

Groups who have already received money include:
- Iraqi Children's Fund
- Voices in the Wilderness
- A.R.R.O.W. (Active Resistance to the Roots of War)
- Campaign Against Arms Trade
- Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases
- Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (local & national)
- Globalise Resistance
- Grassroots Opposition to War
- Movement for the Abolition of War
- Network for Peace
- Stop the War Coalition (national & local)
- Women in Black

The Peace Not War CD and festival are as grass roots as it gets - produced and funded by 2 people out of their East London living room, with help from a handful of volunteers and friends. With no record label and no promotional budget, the word is being spread by word-of-mouth, through peace groups, DJs and artists, emails and through this post which, like everything else has been compiled by volunteers.

PLEASE HELP US SPREAD THE WORD.

Publicize yes,however..

03.02.2004 16:46

Whilst I dont mind publicizing it and indeed have, I cannot attend as i've not got
£15 or £20. and I dont live in London.

Why no rates for the unemployed, pensioners, disabled etc (and I dont mean the usual
couple a quid off).
(£4 or £5 I might have been able to scrape together).

flooding the library

04.02.2004 02:30

sounds good but such a shame about the venue. i live in hackney and like many others who do i am still pissed off the ocean was built there. it used to be the library, a lovely old building, did the job fine. anything wrong with the library had nought to do with the building it was in. now we have a brand new, and horribly ugly, high-tech library built directly across the road (mare st) on the site of a lovely little 'secret' (walled)garden. why did the library have to move? cos the ocean fits the councils dreams of getting folk from all over london and beyond coming to hackney to spend their £££££ on overpriced drinks and gigs, and then go home again. hackney folk dont have enough money to deserve their attention. thats why prices at ocean dont allow for anyone on benefits, or just a bit skint, to get in. they dont want us in there, we're already taking up too much space in the borough, we should get out and let the gentrification continue!

Worldwide call for peace

04.02.2004 11:21

Big up everyone that's playing the Peace Not War festival, this really is it 'live aid for the 21st century', a massive show of unity in the face of establishment wargames and social division; our musical heroes have been bought out and ridiculed by the mainstream media (Ozzy and Johnny Rotten RIP), now is the time to show the strength and diversity of underground protest music worldwide, the fire that we feel seeks expression and will never be sold out !
Geldof and Sting tried their best but now we have Navigator and Maxi Jazz to keep the flame burning; with the death of pop culture it's time for real world music to come through, a universal voice and vision for the future; a fantastic fuzion of musical influences as a vehicle for progressive ideas and resistance.
All the most powerful voices in the UK musical underground, broadcasting live and direct to the world, if you can get in to the venue you'll witness musical and political history in the making - look out for the Peace Not War collective headlining Glastonbury this year !
Please support the movement and the festival, come to London to protest and party, spread the word, make sure all our friends worldwide listen live on Indymedia - we need this now more than ever !

FIFTEEN quid???

09.02.2004 10:05

what ARE you lot thinking of? fifteen quid? take it then that you don't regard this as an event for those of us on the breadline...hence no concession rates...just about making money. (Wasn't the war that this protests against about money too??). This is elitism and it STINKS!

The price of thefestival is NOT too high

09.02.2004 21:35

Yes I am one of the MCs but I will be buying 6 tickets personally for friends and have put significant quantities of my own money into this. (not anything in comparison with the organisers though) but seeing as this IS the main celebration of the largest demonstration in the history of mankind and that Britain (and all of us crusty 'resistance' activists as well) are fully the most guilty parties in all of this (cos it WAS done in our name no matter how you cried otherwise) its a bit rich to pull the 'i'm a worker, i cant afford 15 quid', do i believe you? lets see when you next charge your phone. or lets not, just find that minimal amount of change and come down and represent!

Missing the point

11.02.2004 13:53

It is a shame that people seem to think that £15 is too much for tickets to Ocean - and I think you are missing the point of the event.

The event is a money raiser for the purpose that we are all involved in - stopping the war in Iraq and elsewhere and bringing attention to the associated attrocities.

This is not a commercial venture by a 3rd party cashing in. It is not a sell out, nor over-commercialised, nor invalidated due to the ticket price.

This is not a free party for a reason - funds need to be raised, and costs need to be covered. Wake up!

It is a sad thing that ill thought through reactionary statements are posted AGAINST the anti-war movement by people who should no better. Think about the bigger cause and engage a bit of thought.

Not everyone will be able to attend, which is a great shame, but this is not elitism, this is pragmatism and fundraising. Very different.

Good luck to all performers and organisers. Keep your energies high and don't be dampened down by the negative voices.

from the Peace Not War producers

11.02.2004 23:39

A note from the producers of the Festival...

The ticket price is £15 (same on the door, having been reduced from £20...), and that figure was set to cover the many expenses of each night, to pay the musicians between 0% and 50% of their normal fee, and to raise further funds for the long list of peace groups we have supported in the past year or more via the Peace Not War CD.

We considered giving discounts for some, but decided to minimise the cost for everyone. It's still higher than we'd like, but unfortunately that's how it has to be. No other venue in London can handle the multimedia festival we've planned, and £15 is more than you'd pay to see HALF this lineup normally, let alone the art, film, VJs, healing room etc. The collective putting this on are a non-profit organisation which funds Peace Not War with its own personal money and personal loans.

We have offered free tickets to the "core" staff of many UK peace groups (ie those who do the most work and get paid the least), and also given away free tickets on Indymedia radio, other independent radio stations, progressive press etc. Those who can't attend - for economic or geographical reasons - can at least hear it online each night.

Anyone who is concerned about where the proceeds are going can look at our website for further details www.peace-not-war.org or contact us via  info@peace-not-war.org

I get 54 quid a week to live on...

12.02.2004 10:28

£54 to live on. for a week. I'm on incapacity benefit and can't work. £15 out of that means I either support this or go without food. Hmmm. Which one will it beee....? I wanted to show my suport for this but there's bob hope for the likes of us eh? handy for filling the streets but when it comes to events, there is no provision for the thousands of ordinary folk who live on benefits. (Incidentally I fell off some scaffolding on a building site and broke my back, I'm not a ligger).

Why there aren't concessions?

13.02.2004 14:52

I want to go tomorrow to the Peace not war event and I can pay 15 quid, but haven't you thought about the people who cannot afford it?
It's very good that you want to rise funds for the cause, but is it right that only few of us are able to contribute?
I think it is elitist.

Very good evening - good value

15.02.2004 17:29

I was very pleased to attend last night. It was a pleasure to see that each of us are not alone and that there are so many keen to show that there are alternatives to war.

As for the ticket price, I am only too well aware how expensive it is to put on such an event. I attend and assist in a few folk festivals. It is not just the cost of the preformers (whether they charge 0%, 50% or 100% of their normal fees), but the costs or the venue, staging, lighting, sound, publicity and everything else. I actually thought the price was about right.
