Anti Fur Protest in Truro

juvenile_delinquent | 14.02.2004 20:19 | Animal Liberation

'VIA APPIA', 6, Catherdral Road, Truro, Kernow is selling fur which they claim is 'fashionable'. We think this is unacceptable, and went today to tell them and passers by all about our disgust!

Last year it was fur trims creeping into catwalk and everyday 'fashion'. Now it seems that full length fur is in too. Whether someone covers themselves in fur from head to toe or just has a dead fox lining on their funky parka, the story is the same for the animals-somewhere, someone is trapping wild animals in snares or keeping them in cages only to kill them, perhaps by gassing or electrode through the mouth and anus, simply for their fur which looks most beautiful on them, alive. An animal is killed every second for fur, and we do not need this obscene trend.
However, it seems to be catching on again in high fashion with more coats sported on the cat-fur walks this season. A boutique in Truro was targeted by activists today, who spotted their large window display of dead animals and decided to act to have it removed. When we arrived however the display was gone, although through the window we could clearly see other fur items, and we assumed the coats were hidden somewhere inside the store. We leafletted outside the store and in general the response was very positive. The store had very few customers and most people we spoke to said they would not be buying anything in there. We used a donated fox stole covered in red paint symbolising blood to maximise impact-it seems that this time fur is having heads etc removed, allowing people to ignore the fact that it was once a living animal, and the fox stole helped to bring the fashionable coat they see and the suffering endured behind closed doors they could ignore together for many people. VIA APPIA will not be the only store targetted, any fur selling shop leaves itself open to boycotts, and we will be back again and again until fur is a banned material. Please make sure that you look out for fur in your local shops and boycott any that start thinking that stocking fur is acceptable. Tell them why you will not tolerate fur and organise pickets and leaflets to let others know.

Thoughtless people

I thought you might like to know that following your protest the owner of Via Appia was verbally abused and physically attacked by a drunk vagrant claiming to be 'appalled' by the stores choice of stock. This happened while she was pregnant.

Your mindless protests don't achieve anything other than giving even more mindless people a green light to express themselves with violence, I've watched anti fur protests before and it's amazing what a great time you all have. It makes me wonder how sincere you really are about your cause. If you were dedicated to eradicating the fur trade the last thing you would do is protest outside shops. I've spoken to the lady who owns Via Appia and she's reported a huge increase in trade since you provided her with the kind of publicity money can't buy.

You see all the posters you print and the column inches your actions generate simply tell people where they can buy furs; perhaps you've forgotten that Via Appia wouldn't exist if people didn't want to buy furs.

Far more than your naive belief that you can make a difference, what annoys me more is your plain hypocrisy. What's the difference between animals being killed for their pelts and animals being killed for their meat? Very little I suspect but why don't I ever see you outside Sainsbury's or Tesco? Perhaps you feel more able to bully a small businesswoman who has to face you alone and vulnerable?

I don't see whats so wrong with wearing animal fur, IF and only IF it is used to keep you warm during winter months. i mean yes, I wear ugg boots and I don't disapprove with fur trimmed coats because they are made to keep the user warm. I agree with animals being killed for meat being we eat the meat. I do not agree with a floor length mink coat just for the fun of fashion, thats just a waste. Its a confusing world and it would be confusing on another's part to boycott ALL fur because it has been proven in past winters that fur can be used for good.

Un-Natural Slaughter

I don't agree with being violent in a protest or demonstration, becuase then
deluded people are only going to walk away uneducated.

And as far as I'm concerned, the only people would wear fur products don't
understand crutial emotions; the people protesting are people who unlike you
know what pain and suffering is, People who stand up for the exploitation of
our planet and its inhabitants are people who unlike you have come to realize and understand something that you could possibly not understand.
What you do and say and wear is an expression of who you are,
and everytime I see someone wearing fur, I simply see a
LOW LIFE NOBODY that feels they need parts of a dead body to
look cool.

Eating meat itself is a different issue altogether-
and simply a way for cowardly people like you to change the subject.
Get a life you pothedic asshole.
