9/11 style propaganda spectacle backfires in Spain.

Dancing Dave | 15.03.2004 01:51 | Analysis | Social Struggles | World

Would-be masters of the universe in Washington DC would naturally presume that the spectacular tragedy in Madrid would help the current right wing Spanish government allied to Bush. But Bush's Spanish allies did not benefit from the mass murder like Bush benefitted from 9/11. A few days later, the Spanish electorate threw the ruling party out and elected the Socialists, demanding a full investigation to uncover the hidden truth.

I have to confess that I had a somewhat inappropriate thought today. When I hear the Spanish Socialists had made a sudden come-from-behind victory in their national election, I recalled a line from Lewis Carroll: "Hurray! Hurray! Calloo! Callay! he chortled in his joy." Indeed, I began to scat-sing the poem in the manner of Louis Armstrong.

Clearly, the majority of Spanish people did not trust the present right-wing Bush-and-Blair-allied Spanish government to find the truth about what really happened in Madrid, what they saw was the Government exploiting the tragedy for propaganda purposes without producing any evidence that could really convict the people the Government blamed the mass murder on. They were very right to throw out this Government immediately, in the interest of Peace, Truth, and Justice.

Unfortunately, the next "suspects" to be accused of the crime were "Al Qaeda". Now, whenever you hear that word, remember that the CIA trained, armed and publicized Al Qaeda as convenient "enemy", giving the U.S. Government a pretext to invade anywhere in the Arab and Islamic world: wherever some U.S. Administration could see a "national interest". Here's two good research resources on that:

 http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/CHO301B.html
 http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/KUP310A.html

So if "Al Qaeda" did it, what we are really talking about is a CIA orchestrated operation, possibly employing a few mislead Islamic militants as patsies. And indeed, the supposed "evidence" here rather ridiculous. A Madrid newspaper is conveniently "tipped off" and receives a video tape where an Arabic-looking man takes credit for the crime and says "You love life, but we love death". It might as well have been a video of some dude saying "Hi, I'm Satan, I enjoy killing you people and being in your newspapers"!

For the moment, most Spanish people seem to find this bogus story a bit more credible than the bogus story the Aznar government told them. And after all, wouldn't it be understandable as retaliation for Aznar's government supporting the US/British invasion of Iraq. I don't deny that such retaliation could possibly be involved, but the version we have been told so far is unlikely to survive a few weaks of investigation.

All the same I'm chorteling "Hurray! Hurray! Calloo! Callay!" because this time the tragedy did not play out the way that the right in Washington DC, or in Spain, had been expecting. The Government which supported Bush and Blair in invading Iraq is gone. The Socialists now set to take power vocally opposed that invasion at massive public ralleys.
It would be in the interest of these "peace and justice" socialists to seek the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but truth about what really happened in Spain's most deadly day since the end of their Civil War, over a half-century back.

Who wins ?

The question we should ask is who has benefited here. I don't think many people really believe this was an Islamic bombing (the "convenient" van with its Islamic tapes etc - please). Some in Spain are beginning to question who did set the bombs.

On Spanish TV last night the possibility has been raised of a Socialist / ETA alliance, that will see ETA get the Basque indpendence it seeks and the Socialists achieve power. With the new PM already renaging on his promise to pull Spanish troops out of Iraq (June at the earliest, new UN mandate etc" there is much to concern us here. Just because it was a Socialist government who benefited let us not be blind.

Terrorism works

That's the message. It's unmistakable. A terrorist attack has changed the outcome of an election. Expect many more to come as groups worldwide take notes from this sad week in Madrid.

The Lewis Carroll quote from Jabberwock is:

"O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

You'll find the rest of the poem here to which you may now scat along to correctly:  http://www.bluestraveler.net/lyrics/unreleased/jabberwock.html

Erm, and the rest of your article's okay, I suppose.

Al-Quaeda Arrests

15.03.2004 11:19

After 3 Morrocans and 2 Indians were arrested yesterday the (ex)Government conceded that anything other than a Basque connection was possible but today we read that one of those arrested had previously been under suspicion of having Al-Quaeda links so that the Government were well aware from the beginning that it was a real possibility and only pushed the ETA line for purely cynical reasons- hoping the police wouldn´t make arrests till after the election day (yesterday)! And this from the party of law and order!
Spanish people took the initiative and besieged the PP offices with the cry-"We want the truth"-maybe now we will get it?
Aznar and co. have been whinging on about how it´s all wrong to beseige their offices a day before the election and even making noises to the electoral commision about postponing the election- but they would have none of it. Well maybe somethig good will now transpire.

the proper term for that "calloo callay" emotion is "shadenfreude"

15.03.2004 12:11

shadenfreude will not help the Spanish or Basques or Catalans or the Americans.
it is a natural emotion but not one you should allow to sit long.

Shadenfreude will not dislodge Burlosconi.

over 200 are dead, and in the emotional turmoil that has followed, more have been killed.
now is a time for reflection and honesty.

The Socialist Link ?

15.03.2004 16:07

George Raven is right to raise this issue which is very much the talk of Spain (but not in the mainstream media ??).

The Islamic van is just too stupid to be believed, ETA was caught trying to do the same thing a month before and now we are asked to beleive this was Islamic ?

An agreement seems possible.

ETA / Al Quida link ?

15.03.2004 17:57

I hadn't considered this at first but yes it does seem credible and would explain the lame "van with a tape" red herring.

tobs

No ???

15.03.2004 18:07

I can't believe that a Socialist party would have had anything to do with a terrorist attack of this kind. The idea of them forming an alliance with the Eta organisation and then killing all these people just to gain power is beyond belief.

You better belive it

15.03.2004 18:29

sophie, sorry to dissapoint u but just two quick comments from someone who lived under the PSOE party for many years in Spain:

-no, they are not 'socialist' (in any sense of the word)
-and yes, they would be able to do that and much more

Spanish elections: real positive development to celebrate!

16.03.2004 00:12

Thanks for the correct poem text, the last time I saw it I was in Elementary school, and strangely enough, this is the first occasion that started bringing it back to me.

I think this is a very positive development, because the pattern of cover-up that worked for 9/11 broke down so quickly this time. The Aznar government didn't even get a chance to put on their fix. The chance of a real criminal investigation just skyrocketed.

So now Spain has this young lawyer Zapatero, one of the youngest elected national leaders on Earth. Zapatero vocally opposed the Iraq war. He supports the unification of Europe. He knows the difference between legal proof and prejudicial propaganda.

This election result may be a historic turning point. It is certainly a positive development we should all be celebrating.

Something´s changing in our minds

17.03.2004 18:34

Hello to everybody,i just want to say that a connection between the socialist party and ETA is imposible as we now Know that it´s imposible that ETA is behind these bomb attacks.

I think we all must celebrate this enormous lesson from Spain:"Sometimes democracy works",everybody here couldn´t believe a week ago that the Popular Party(right) could loose this weekend,it´s very sad that we needed a tragedy like this to change up our minds but at least now we know that if people work together we can change things without any political party help.We are not going to stop our demands of a better world even we have a left government, now it´s time to work harder and try to make people think that the spanish way it´s the best way to kick out the fucking government´s ass,Blair and Bush are the next ones it´s up to you to do it the right way.

We´ll see ya in the 20th March anti war demonstrations.
