Non-news / Repeated Menworth Storys..

WORLD WAR FREE. | 23.03.2004 12:16 | Sheffield

IMC Guidelines for removing a post:

Repeated : content that is reposted or text that was originally a comment posted as a report.

Non-news : posts which are clearly purely comment, opinion or rants unrelated to a recent event or action etc.

Which would mean the following.

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2004/03/287465.html

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2004/03/287375.html

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2004/03/287348.html

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2004/03/287359.html

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2004/03/287308.html

Is in direct breach of this: (Repeated : content that is reposted or text that was originally a comment posted as a report).

So why was it that one photo report on Hard drugs was removed because it had a link to all other 104 images. Here are over 15 images AND a front page article on ONE subject.

This is also Non-news (posts which are clearly purely comment, opinion or rants unrelated to a recent event or action etc.)

It has no direct impact on the people of Sheffield, if anything it is a Leeds IMC story.

This has been posted here as some people are not aware of the contacts page and how it works etc. Yes i agree this ain't a bulletin bord.

Neither should it be just about eco-activism, it should contain news such as what's happening within the communities of Sheffield.

This was said of another article removed from the newswire:
Here is what destroyerofculture said

>"Hidden. Not only a virtual repeat of previous CAN article I'm also
>highly dubious of the origin of this post."

In theory every article breaks the publishing rules, everyone who posts an
article is promoting/advertising something even if it is just their ego,
credibility or website. I know you lot have your own imc ego/credibility to
preserve but if you are too strict you will end up like before when no-one
posted articles on indymedia because of fear of the embarassment when they
are removed. Alot of people have poor literacy skills and therefore stuff
that is 'badly' written happens and to censor that kind of stuff simply puts
salt in the wound. If you really want a wide rang of people posting stuff
up there and you want an active newswire and not just a newswire that is
filled by eco-worriors, mozaz and yourself it is inevitable that bad
articles will be written that will break the rules. There is a proccess
that exsists, it is called the comments section where a bad article is given
balance, spelling is checked and errors are amended, through this process
peoples literacy skills improve.

>The start says: "Do not forgett this SUNDAY hippies go mad in sharrow"
>I doubt that this is how CAN want this family event to be portrayed.

There is a comment from mat on this article that says the article does
represent the views of Sheffield CAN. I do not know what you get up to
nowadays but i can bet that mat who has founded and led sheffield CAN has
far more authority and credibility when talking about the network than
yourself.

Which post was hidden?

By the way I don't think the posts about menwith hill should be hidden - they seem fine to me.

Do agree indymedia isnt just about eco-action...

what?

23.03.2004 12:31

From what i saw of the post regarding Hard Drugs in Sheffield it was just a loop of images. It was unrelated to news etc... So it had a right to be hidden. However, the information posted in the Menwith Hill posts was unique in each one (except 1 or 2 which were duplicate posts and were hidden). The articles did not break the rules as they were related to an action that had just happened. ie News.

This post is not news so should also be hidden. I agree that this site is not a bulletin board.

If you have problems with the way things are done, take part. Join in and help run the IMC.

photos are news

23.03.2004 12:53

IMC needs to sort out its attitude to photo essays which ought to be seen as valid news stories in themselves so long as they come with a little (con)text. the sheffield drugs photos were valid in terms of news, there were just far too many of them. many the same, nearly the same, or just too poor to look at. but there were some good photos in there as well. maybe if the link had led to 20 not 104...

what is the issue

23.03.2004 12:57

In my opinion this article is well written and although i oppose the inclusion of my veiws without my consent (i have already made my views clear to the sheff-imc peeps), i believe that the way the guidelines are used is irresponsible. The current guide lines can outlaw any article, this means that there could be a bias against visual and audio articles - there needs to be clearer guidelines regarding the use of these resources to illustrate a news issue.

Secondly, there is a huge hypocracy regarding the SWP and its proxies, this article ( http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2004/03/286276.html)
about the RESPECT Unity coalition (RUC) was kept in - not because of its own merits but because someone put a really quality comment (and picture) about the SWP. It is clear, without that comment the article would be cut - compare that to the article that included the rolling images about drug use in sheffield (which is a *very* important issue).

Thirdly, there is a democracy issue, the sheff-imc team has got into the habbit of saying that they will cut an article from the newswire unless someone objects within 24 hours of sending the email. Those of us who use crap servers, crap email servers, get bombarded with junk mail and do not have 24 access to the net may not be able to object in the first place. Also many people may be indifferent to some articles because it is on an issue that they are not interested in - so they will not object. There has been another proccess put forward (not by myself but i think it is a far better idea) - how about simply asking somone on the list to second them before they remove an article. Or even it would be very possible to leave an article on the newwire for at least 3 days and allow people to object via the comments section or by emailing the indymedia list.

On a personal note, unfortunatly i do not feel welcome to the indymedia meetings partly because i do not have the confidence and technical knowhow to be able to fully participate in the management of the newswire. I could ask but i have been told by an associate that the indymedia techs all too often end up using tech speak that i could simply have no chance to desipher.

Ego Warrior

23.03.2004 12:58

Here's the post about drugs:

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2004/03/286734.html

I don't think anyone's suggesting complteley hiding the Minwith posts, just gropuing them all on the main feature to leave room for non-Eco Warrior stuff.

The thing taken off the newswire was this one:

Another way...

23.03.2004 13:13

I've seen more rows over a few posts hidden in Sheffield that I have anywhere else in UK IMC. It seems to me posting more non-news discussion stuff onto the newswire is just going to p*ss people active in Sheffield IMC off even more - which would be counter productive too.

I don't have the answer. But raging on and on about one or two posts on a newswire isn't getting anyone anywhere. Stuff gets hidden all the time. There are discussions about what gets hidden all the time. It is one place where collectives think about what the IMC is there for... evidently they didn't think it was there for promoiting what ever was in these few posts.

Maybe a spash more current context or something else with the next post might make it more interesting. Dunno.

seems a bit missing the point

23.03.2004 14:12

Menwith photos are by different people and are different photos.

The drugs picture posts are links to the same sets of pictures, which is somewhat different.

Seems the smallest least explanation post was hidden from the newswire, well in fact it was a post complaining that someone on the imc email list thought the previous post might be a candidate for hiding so it was really just a moaning post, but moaning about something that didn't happen - ie hiding of the original post. Storm in a tea cup... seems like this should be kept to the email list discussion, where it belongs and where it's all archived and transparent.

This post is non-news

23.03.2004 14:21

This post itself could be said to break the non news guideline and thus should be hidden:

Non-news : posts which are clearly purely comment, opinion or rants

But people's input to what's on Indymedia is always valued. Instead of posting a newswire post (that contravenes the guidelines) best write to one of the Indymedia lists. The local list site if posted to a local IMC or the features list for UK.

You don't have to join these lists to post and you can read all the replies via the archives.

Features list:

This is the class war not the fucking IMC club:

Yes i agree. However here we have the real opportunity to give our class, the working class, their voice back. Let me tell you when destroyer of culture says:

On a personal note, unfortunately i do not feel welcome to the indymedia meetings partly because i do not have the confidence and technical knowhow to be able to fully participate in the management of the newswire. I could ask but i have been told by an associate that the indymedia techs all too often end up using tech speak that i could simply have no chance to desipher.

Likewise speaking to fad this morning he expressed more of the same:

IMC should be all inclusive not fucking exclusive to a few geeks such as me who know what the fuck they're going on about. So i can write html from me head: Write a script to generate 104 images in the hard drugs story:

Look, all 104 images are not that good: It is the context of the story, here is what someone said to the whole of image by  actfourpeace@yahoo.com

Hey up lad,

Gimme a bell at some point, would ya? Good images. No, absolutely
f@@kin astounding images - I've pitched in me bit to say they should
stay on Indymedia. We should meet up and chat about this.

I think there's a lot of potential here. Got a good quote for you,
think you might like it:

"wherever your wound is, that's where your gift to society is too."

[Robert Bly, paraphrased.]

Your anger needs a bit of channelling - a lot of channelling. Gimme a
call. Think its time we did some work together, dude.
Bluntly - your eye for a story, and your courage, are second to none.
Your writing skills and your diplomacy are poo. I'll help with the
last two, if you'll let me.

Image are into Open Democracy as said not enough people know about the contacts page and e mail disscusion side of this shit. This is why the whole of image who are:

Freak Peace: research, photography, html, words & design
Nobody Here But us PIGEONS: research & words
World WAR free: research, words, photography & design
d4: research, photography, html scripts

Believe in the tactic of posting shit here, it might piss of the middle class (independant middle class) but then this is the class war.

This being one of the many battles in that class war:

Image are not here to impress make friends etc: We are here to expose the degradation of the working class:

There is a real opportunity for Sheffield IMC to be used as a positive and not simply promoting the narrow interest of those who at the end of the day control this fucking news wire etc:

Yes my anger needs channeling, thats the whole point of image:

The War goes on
