Saboteurs Injured in Hunt Violence

Sheffield Sabs | 14.04.2004 13:18 | Animal Liberation | Sheffield

On Saturday 13th March two sabs were hospitalised as a result of a number of attacks by members of the Barlow Hunt at their last hunt of the season.

Despite a police presence (which we doubt was due to other attacks on sabs throughout the season!) from the outset, and words from one of the red coats condemning ‘violence with the anti’s,’ the confrontations began as soon as the hounds set off.

Not happy with ‘merely’ slaughtering the wildlife, huntsmen and support tried to remove our right to use the footpaths, and later, the roads. Twenty sabs, intent on preventing the killing of foxes, entered the field were confronted with violence. Those remaining on the road were also attacked, a 48 year old driver of one of the vehicles was intentionally ridden down and kicked by a red coat. This happened in front of the police, although no immediate action was taken. The injured sab was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The next set of hunt aggression arose with sabs being attacked, thrown over walls and ridden at. The violence climaxed as the red coat, who asked his supporters to be peaceful rode towards sabs, exclaimed, ‘its my wildlife’ and with all of his might struck a saboteur over the head with a metal capped hunting whip, before riding away. This none violent protestor was knocked to the floor and quickly covered in blood from an arterial wound. He was clearly in shock, but the unbiased police thought he ought to be able to make a positive identification of the perpetrator. The sab was taken to hospital by ambulance, where his head has been glued and stitched. The injury was worse than originally thought.

Although one of the red coats was initially arrested, he was then released quickly as he attacked the first sab and not the second. Reports are that at least one of the offenders was arrested and interviewed. Though reports also say that the injuries that sabs sustained were minor, so who knows?!?

Smacks of desperation

14.04.2004 14:25

The violence witnessed this year against hunt sabs has been stepped up as the rich and their slaves start to panick that their sick and twisted pastime is about to be cast into history.. and the sooner the better!

(I Doubt that 'Red Ted' has ever risked life and limb fighting for any cause save for his own selfish desires)

A course not...

14.04.2004 15:23

...um. I remember well the Mendip farmers, George Baker, hunt-sabbing for about a decade, then detention centre for ALF stuff and caught up in a full-scale military invasion in Bethlehem at Easter 2002... so, no, not much really. But did you save any fluffy bunnies?

what's your point?

If you are not just trolling (which i think you are), what is your point Red Ted?

Are you anti-hunting? if so why such rediculous comments?

Video Camera?

15.04.2004 08:08

Sounds like what you need is someone (not particpating in the action) with a video camera to record this stuff. Then you'd have all the evidence you'd need and it would be very hard for the cops not to prosecute and impossible for those attacking to get off.

Unfortunately I can't think of any Sheff activists with video cameras - too poor generally it seems. Worth a fundraiser for tho?

video cameras

15.04.2004 10:12

Unfortunately a person with a video camera becomes an instant target - if they film something incriminating then they are set upon and the camera is smashed and the film destroyed. Or else the police take it and then conveniently lose it.

Two camera people then?

15.04.2004 10:59

Well maybe you need a couple of camera people then - go in a seperate vehicle and keep an obvious distance - as if making a documentary, dress smartly, as if an official media group. Could even start the day by trying to interview some of the hunters.

Undercurrents would prob know how to go about this. This type of video activism has been used very effectively elsewhere so I'm sure it could be adapted.

Another possibility would be to wear a legal observer jackets.

The cops would have no reason to take the camera or arrest anyone coz the only offence would be civil - ie. trespass.

You might also involve people who don't usually go on these things too. Not everyone cares so much about foxes but when humans are starting to get bashed over the head more people must be bothered.

As for Red Turd no, I've never heard of shameless or David Peace so no idea what you're on about.
