Unite Against Fascism - launch statement

'We call, as a matter of the greatest urgency, for the broadest unity
against the alarming rise in racism and fascism in Britain today.

'The fascist British National Party averaged 17 per cent of the vote in the
seats they contested in the last local government elections and now has a
record 16 councilors across Britain. They are poised to field candidates in
the 2004 European Parliament, local government elections and the next
general election, in what they hope will be the biggest electoral assault
ever mounted by the far right in this country.

'The BNP is now trying to present itself as a 'respectable' political party.
In fact they are a fascist party. Currently they seek to attract votes on
the basis of racism, Islamophobia and the vilification of refugees and
asylum seekers. But fascists also stand for the expulsion of Black and Asian
people from this country, the destruction of the trade unions and the
elimination of basic democratic rights.

'We believe that this dangerous situation requires a new and united response
from all those dedicated to freedom and democracy. Now is the time for all
of us to combine our forces and unite in a broad and common front against
this common threat.'

Vote Labour (not)

16.04.2004 20:36

'The broadest unity' 'common front' etc. What you mean presumably, is vote for any party likely to win any seat anywhere as long as it is not the BNP. So don't vote for the fascists who espouse petrol-bombing Asian families out of their homes (or did before they got 'respectable'). Good, don't vote for those bastards. But vote instead for the fascists who are not just talking about but actually organising the bombing of Iraqi families out of their homes on a daily basis. Get real. Who is more dangerous - Nick Griffin or Tony Blair. No contest

Just Do It

16.04.2004 23:20

I think the idea is that people just vote for someone.

If the BNP get 7.5% of the turn out, they get an MEP (I think that's right).

The more people vote Respect or Green or yes Labour or even Tory, the less chance we have of being 'represented' by a Nazi.

Imagine that, MEP for our region, a fascist!!

No way, don't let them get in on the backs of apathy and disillusion.

See you April 20th at King's College?

Not apathetic

17.04.2004 08:36

I would happily come to your meeting but I don't live in Cambridge. I am not remotely apathetic and very active. You entirely miss my point. We are currently 'represented' by purveyors of vicious racist violence, who have the weapons, both military and legal ones with which to implement their views. I am not going to vote for them in any circumstances whatsoever and doing so is not 'better' than voting for some group that wants its racism implemented with boots instead of tanks, and its racist laws to be named 'repatriation' instead of 'asylum and immigration'.

I am not saying that the BNP are an irrelevance but that the main enemy is something else, which is currently far more powerful, and it would be a very bad tactic to support the main enemy in order to confront a lesser one.

yes

Exactly, the BNP should never be used to coerce people into voting for the Tories or anyone else if they otherwise wouldn't.
