99% of Labour supporters say hunting should not be the Government's priority

Henry | 10.05.2004 16:57

A new NOP poll commissioned by the Countryside Alliance has found that 99% of Labour supporters think that there are more important issues for the Government to tackle than hunting.

The poll asked: "Which of the following do you consider to be the most important for the Government to tackle? Labour supporters responded:

The NHS 34%
Immigration 17%
Terrorism/ Iraq 22%
Education 24%
Hunting 1%

Simon Hart, Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance, said: "Anti-hunting Labour MPs have suggested that a ban on hunting would motivate their voters and the party faithful - this is clearly nonsense when 99% of Labour voters have other priorities. The real fact is that these MPs' own supporters think that they should be putting the NHS, Education, Iraq and Immigration well above hunting on the political agenda.

"The House of Commons seems to be the only place left where a ban on hunting is considered either important or desirable. The continuing obsession of some backbench Labour MPs with this issue will only add to the impression that politicians are out of touch with ordinary voters - and they risk making their Government look completely ridiculous".

80 per cent want hunting with dogs banned!

10.05.2004 17:25

80 per cent of the population still think that hunting with dogs is barbaric and cruel and want it banned, even if it is not top of their list of priorities. I suppose in a similar poll of which charities people give to the RSPCA would only get 1 per cent. But that does not mean that most people don't care about animal suffering.

watch out for more statistics twists

10.05.2004 17:47

Pretty soon the CA will be twisting this poll to say that 99% of the population (as opposed to labour supporters) are against hunting being banned, or some such nonsense. If they were being truely honest then the poll will have asked it of the population at large.

The fact is, that though priorities may be different the vast majority of the population want hunting banned full stop. This poll does not say anything about labour supporters being pro or anti hunting.

Lies and Statistics and all that

10.05.2004 21:13

The results are entirely determined by the question. Of course people put (human) healthcare and (human suffering) in Iraq etc before Foxhunting . . . most people value human life over animal life. The majority of people want the barbarity of hunting banned, and by the way I grew up in rural england - this is not a 'rural' issue it a sadistic one. Stop twisting stats to justify barbarity, you only show yourselves up.

"the majority of people just don't care about you"

10.05.2004 22:22

Or in fact YOU henry. 1% of labour voters (33% of the population over 18) see hunting as their top election priority. I find that quite reassuring that people are not all-consumed by the sadistic pastimes of a cultish minority.

Shockingly 0% answered paedophilia! Oh my god - 100% of the population must support paedophilia! If we are true democrats we must un-ban the rape of children!

Grow up henry, the result was determined by the question. A clear majority still want hunting with dogs banned. In fact If i remember correctly this CA stat has been knocking about for a fair while, its also unreferenced and so is only tenuously 'news' - it seems you're scraping the barrel; for justifications to watch foxes torn apart by hounds. I can't decide whether I feel angry with you or sorry for you.

Criminal waste of time

11.05.2004 13:56

Anyone who devotes large amounts of time and energy into trying to get fox hunting ban ought to be fined by real activists for wasting their energy on an utterly unimportant little silly countryside activity!!!

How anyone can be this motivated, when there are so many incredibly more worthy and important causes to fight for, is beyond me.

If we lived in a perfect world with no poverty, war, or pending envronmental disaster, then fine, campaign against fox hunting. Until then, stop wasting your time, and think about doing something genunily worthwhile.

We can walk a whistle

11.05.2004 15:49

We can wilk a whistle, when hunting is banned then we can concentrate fully on other issues without distractions!

what?

12.05.2004 11:28

Why did you miss of this bit Henry?

*NOP 23rd - 25th April. 964 respondents in total. Available on request.

Is it because you, as well as everyone else, know/s that 964 people is not a section of the proportion of the population to go by? 60 Million people in the UK so that makes it 0.002% of the population.

Also, when posting an article from another site, please remember to source it.

end hunting

12.05.2004 11:41

Hunting is absolutely horrifc and must go.
DEMOCRACY HAS SPOKEN.

I am a Labour Party supporter and my main prioritory is education, but that does not mean i don't care about anything else!

Tearing a part an animal for fun is wrong. Brining up your children to chaseand tear an animal apart is beyond horrific.

END HUNTING NOW!!!

Preaching to the unconvertable is a stupid tactic Henry. Also chasing one fox around with a pack of hounds and a load of men in stupid red coats blowing bugles must consume a rediculiously nunececary amount of resources. I think this activity has no practical purpose what so ever, youre doing it for fun!

P.S I am not a labour supporter and niether are the majority of the people in this country!
