A veteran Thunder Bay police officer, most recently convicted of wrecking his cruiser, faces six Criminal Code charges.
At a video hearing in Ontario Court yesterday, Const. Andre Lichtenfeld stood stone-faced as justice of the peace Gord Buterin read out the lengthy information.
Lichtenfeld, 44, is charged with attempting to obstruct justice, personation with intent and firearms offences.
Assistant Crown attorney Trevor Jukes said Lichtenfeld could be released from custody if he abides by conditions. When asked by Buterin if he understood and accepted the conditions, Lichtenfeld said “Yes, I do” in a clear, firm voice.
Lichtenfeld, a 22-year veteran of the force, was charged following an “extensive” five-month criminal investigation, Thunder Bay Police said.
Lichtenfeld had been on paid suspension since Dec. 9, 2003.
He has been in trouble before. On Feb. 20, 2003 he was found guilty of deceit and causing damage to equipment after a week-long Police Services Act trial.
On May 30, 2002, a cruiser being driven by Lichtenfeld crashed into the raised sidewalk on the James Street swing bridge and tore through the railing. The police car was a write-off.
Lichtenfeld was suspended a total of 18 days.
When the charges were laid in July 2002, Lichtenfeld was reassigned to the Balmoral Street lockup.
The new allegations involve one of Lichtenfeld’s supporters during that Police Act trial. The charge of attempting to obstruct justice involves James David Gamble, whom police allege was told by Lichtenfeld to lie about an investigation.
Gamble, 49, was arrested on Dec. 12, 2002 on suspicion of impaired driving. A new information against him was sworn out only two months ago.
He’s to appear in court May 19.
The charge of impersonating an individual allegedly stems from a complaint made to Thunder Bay Animal Services about a handler.
A search of Lichtenfeld’s Murillo home May 3 turned up a .357 Magnum revolver. He was charged with three firearms-related offences and possession of stolen property, a Motorola portable radio.
He is to return to court June 16.
