At least 10 Palestinians are reported killed as Israeli forces fired on a crowd in Rafah in southern Gaza. Thousands of people were demonstrating against a massive operation in the refugee camp on the edge of the town.Several children were among the dead, and more than 50 people were injured, Palestinian medical workers said.

Israeli forces entered Rafah refugee camp on Tuesday to attack militants and find and destroy tunnels used to smuggle weapons.

It has been one of the largest and bloodiest operations in Gaza since Israel occupied it in 1967, correspondents say.

Hospital chaos

Witnesses said Israeli helicopters, tanks and troops fired at marchers heading towards the Tel Sultan area where the Israel raids have been concentrated in the last two days.

The Israeli army said it was investigating the reports.

Gaza: Occupation and anger

Wounded protesters were evacuated from the scene of the shooting by ambulance, private cars and donkey carts to the Rafah hospital, witnesses said.
A BBC correspondent at the hospital said the floors were drenched in blood as doctors treated incoming patients in corridors and on staircases.

The shooting came shortly after reports that thousands of Tel Sultan residents had complied with an Israeli demand that they surrender.

Twenty-four Palestinians have already died in Tel Sultan during an operation dubbed "Operation Rainbow" by the Israeli army.

Soldiers had called on loudspeakers for all males aged 16 or over to come out carrying white flags or risk the demolition of their family homes.

Israeli commanders later told journalists they only wanted militants to come out.

Israeli actions have raised an international outcry after army chief Lt Gen Moshe Yaalon said troops would flatten row upon row of homes in Rafah camp to widen a patrol road along the border with Egypt.

The area is a hotbed of Palestinian militancy where seven Israeli soldiers were killed in ambushes last week.

However, the army said on Tuesday that there was no plan to systematically demolish homes.

US attack kills 40 at wedding

An American helicopter has fired on a wedding party in western Iraq, killing more than 40 people.

The US military said it could not confirm the report and was investigating.

Lieutenant Colonel Ziyad al-Jbouri, deputy police chief of Ramadi, said between 42 and 45 people were killed in the attack, which took place about 2.45am in a remote desert area near the border with Syria and Jordan.

He said the dead included 15 children and 10 women.

Dr Salah al-Ani, who works at a hospital in Ramadi, put the death toll at 45.

Associated Press Television News obtained videotape showing a truck containing bodies of people who were allegedly killed in the incident.

Most of the bodies were wrapped in blankets and other cloths, but the footage showed at least eight uncovered, bloody bodies, several of them children. One of the children was headless.

Iraqis interviewed on the videotape said partygoers were firing in the air in traditional wedding celebration. American troops have sometimes mistaken celebratory gunfire for hostile fire.

APTN footage showed the truck of bodies and mourners with shovels digging graves over a wide, dusty area in Ramadi. A group of men crouched and wept around one coffin.

Al-Ani said people at the wedding were firing weapons in the air, and that American troops came to investigate and then left. However, he said, helicopters attacked the area at about 3am. Two houses were destroyed in the attack. US troops took the bodies and those injured in a truck to Rutba hospital, he said.

Without backing up Israel's aggressive policy in Rafah this week...

20.05.2004 07:14

Without backing up Israel's aggressive policy in Rafah this week, there is a point in tm words - there is way too much traffic on this newswire regarding Israel activities and way less traffic regarding the American/British coalition in occupied Iraq.
And that makes me laugh - While your nation sents thousands of soldiers to occupy a distant country (and helping another nation's regime gain more oil or whatever), you - the left/"anti-patriotic" keep arguing and condemning the activities of another country.

I think you'll find

20.05.2004 20:54

I think you'll find there is a fair bit of condemnation of the occupation of Iraq coming from people on this site, and certainly in what we do in real life. I campaign to end both the occupation in Iraq AND Palestine, and its essentially the same thing. Just because we're now directly occupying a country, does that mean we forget about the original occupation the US supports with billions of dollars?
Its the same thing, with the same agenda, trying to seperate one from the other is impossible. The same players are involved, the same interests are served.
