5 DON'T LET GILDAN CUT AND RUN IN HONDURAS
Montreal-based T-shirt manufacturer Gildan Activewear made a surprise
announcement during a meeting with the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and
Worker Rights Association (WRC) that it will close its El Progreso
factory in Honduras on September 30, leaving 1,800 workers unemployed.
Gildan’s decision to cut and run from the factory in the midst of
negotiations on corrective action is totally unacceptable and a clear
violation of the FLA’s corporate membership requirements.
The Maquila Solidarity Network is demanding that Gildan reverse its
decision to close the factory and fully implement all recommendations
for corrective action being requested by the FLA and WRC as a result of
their investigations.
Please send a letter to Gildan today. Key questions to ask Gildan
include:
1. Will Gildan reverse its decision to close its highly productive El
Progeso factory?
2. Will Gildan commit to fully implementing all the recommendations for
corrective action from the FLA and WRC?
3. Will Gildan provide full back pay to any workers whom the FLA or WRC
determine were unjustly fired for union activity or union sympathies?
4. If the FLA and WRC reports indicate that Gildan has violated workers’
right to freedom of association, will Gildan release a public statement
acknowledging that those violations took place, offering to fully
compensate any workers whose rights were violated and pledging to take
appropriate steps to ensure that such violations do not occur in other
Gildan factories in the future?
Send your emails to  slemay@gildan.com and send a copy to the Maquila
Solidarity Network at  info@maquilasolidarity.org

9 USE YOUR LOAF: ROUND ONE TO US
The Use Your loaf squatted social centre in Deptford has survived
another attempt to kick them out. Use Your Loaf have hosted No Sweat
events and are generally a jolly good bunch. They are still under threat
of the eviction from the landlords who appear to want to run the grade 2
listed building down so they can cash in on a residential development.
Show your support if you can. Get in touch at USE YOUR LOAF, 227
Deptford High Street, Deptford, SE8.  useyourloaf@btinternet.com
