Some more incineration facts

Dan | 19.08.2004 13:06 | Analysis | Ecology | Sheffield

Some facts on incineration - put together, we're left with the question: why the hell are we incinerating? It's madness!

Fact: Onyx’s incinerators produce dioxins, one of the most toxic chemicals known to humankind.

Go and type ‘dioxin’ and ‘incinerator’ into Google if you don’t believe me – you’ll find a whole lot of US incinerators have been closed down by local people in the States for this very reason.

The World Health Organisation agrees: “In terms of dioxin release into the environment, solid waste incinerators are the worst culprits.” ( http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs225/en/)

Fact: The UN has now banned dioxins, which is the worst of the ‘dirty dozen’ chemicals outlawed by the 2001 Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants.

The UN’s own press release says: “Of all the pollutants released into the environment every year by human activity, persistent organic pollutants are the most dangerous. For decades these highly toxic chemicals have killed and injured people and wildlife by inducing cancer and damaging the nervous, reproductive and immune systems. They have also caused uncounted birth defects.”

Fact: The UN Stockholm Convention commits governments to eliminating production and environmental releases of dioxins – but Sheffield Council continues to promote their production!

Fact: Dioxins accumulate in the body’s fat – and once there, they never leave. Most of it gets there through our food, since two thirds of the incinerator’s waste goes straight up into the air and out into the environment, where it enters the food chain.

Fact: Foetuses and new-born babies are most vulnerable to Dioxin's toxic effects.

Fact: The Lancet, a respected British medical journal, contained an article in May 2001 stating that teenage boys living near incinerators had smaller testicles and females had smaller breasts.

Fact: On top of all this, there is absolutely NO good reason to choose incineration as a waste strategy. Plenty of others are available – go to www.greenpeace.org.uk and do a search on incineration to find some thoroughly designed alternatives.

Fact: Once up and running, incinerators need to be kept fed with waste at full capacity – wrecking any other recycling waste strategy we might want to pursue in the future.

So – given that incineration is expensive, enormously toxic, unnecessary and stuffs up our long-term sustainability, er... why the hell do we continue to use it?

Well, there are only two possibilities, neither very comforting.

The council is thinking more about the money they receive from Onyx than the health and sustainability of Sheffield? Surely not!

Or, nobody in the council has bothered to do even basic research into the health effects of incineration, the damage to our future environmental policy, or the wealth of available alternatives.

Which do you suppose it is?

Renewable RUBBISH !

yes it's a big EU scam(green party sell out) and they get paid four times the going rate for the leccie cos burning municipal rubbish and a "fraction" of industrial waste is counted as renewable energy anyone know the percentages ?

yes but

Incinerator stuff

20.08.2004 04:57

Interesting Dan, and obviously well researched information.
However, what I know to be also obvious is that, out of the 490,000 residents/inhabitants of City of Sheffield, there are approxiamately 489,000 of them that are or appear to be(judging by the low turnouts at meetings/demonstrations/area panels/council meetings)totally indifferent or uncaring about the dangers of incineration, toxins, dioxins, environmental and social(unsocial) pollution damage.
In short, they do not appear to give a SHIT.
Why would they? when there is a wensday match or a united match or an ingland match on tele? or there is bingo tonight, as there was last night and the night before and they have the video to tape "corro" and the similar crap that they are fed and eat unquestioningly?
Do I sound very cynical or sceptical?
Well, sadly, so very fuc**ng sadly, there is much truth in this and the "misplacement of peoples values" (lets be polite huh?) in Shi**y Sheffield.
How do I know this? Why do I appear to be so cynical?
I have lived in this shi*hole for over 40 years and have been active and campaigning on this "save the world"crap for the last 9 or 10 years.

The politicians/corrupted have been asked nicely, several times, nay many.
Time, I think, to take action(of whatever kind) to close this and other incinerators down for GOOD, and I mean GOOD.
Thanks for your posting.

Slough Anti-Incinerator Network (SAIN)

20.08.2004 11:04

Hi Dan and others,

Firstly, thanks for posting that information up, its great to see this issue being bebated with more frequency and urgency recently.
I am involved in the anti-incinerator campaign in Slough and west london (against Grundon incinerators at Colnbrook, near slough/hillingdon). To the person who says no one gives a shit, well if thats true in Sheffield then Im sorry, but with regard to my experience in this area, you're wrong. Our group formed from local resident (not experienced activists) within days of the incinerators harmful effects becoming public knowledge. in the 5 months since, we have successfully built huge public support and it became a main issue in this area (as well as west london which will be worst affected). It became such an issue that in the local elections, Labour (who have controlled Slough for over 20 years) were defeated, and anti-incinerator, independent candidates have got in. They are now investigating revoking planning permission, and we will continue our campaign in Slough.
Recently, we have been spreading to west london because it will be worst affected and because Grundon need a huge contract from the west london waste authority to secure financial backing. We have held well attended public meetings in Hounslow and last night in Hillingdon, and in both cases new action groups have been inspired to form to fight this threat in their own area. So to suggest people dont care is wrong. People might be tired, misled by the corporate propaganda or mistakenly believe they cant win. But they do care.

If anyone reading this is in West London (Hounslow, Hillingdon, Ealing, Harrow, Brent, Richmond) please get in touch with SAIN. We have more meetings coming up and more people are needed to stop the contracts in West London.

If anyone wants more information on incineration, please see www.sainslough.co.uk and the links from that site.

Good luck again Dan, (with the social forum stuff as well!!) get in contact with SAIN if you want, we can maybe offer some mutual solidarity/support.

Cheers,

Stu.
