Venezuela plane crash kills 25

Sunday, August 22, 2004 Posted: 10:27 AM EDT (1427 GMT)

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) -- A Venezuelan air force plane carrying three crew members and 22 passengers has crashed in bad weather in central Venezuela, killing all on board, an aviation official said Sunday.

Rescue workers located the wreckage of the twin-prop Short C-23 Sherpa near Mariara, in the foothills of mountains in Carabobo state, west of Caracas, and no survivors were reported, a spokesman for Venezuela's Civil Aviation Search and Rescue Center said.

Air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane Saturday afternoon when it was returning from the Caribbean island of La Orchila, off Venezuela's northern coast.

"We're assuming the accident happened in bad weather," the civil aviation spokesman told Reuters.

The passengers were a mixture of military personnel and civilians, including five children, who had been on a "recreational trip" to Orchila island, the spokesman said.

The Short Sherpa is a military version of the Shorts 360 airliner built by Shorts Brothers PLC of Northern Ireland, which is the European unit of Bombardier Aerospace .

Venezuela plane crash 'kills 25'

A Venezuelan air force plane has crashed, killing all 25 passengers and crew, aviation officials say.

The aircraft came down in bad weather in a mountainous region in Carabobo state, west of the capital, Caracas, Reuters quoted an official as saying.

The spokesman said military personnel and civilians - including five children - were on board.

The plane was returning from La Orchila on the Caribbean coast when it went missing on Saturday afternoon.

"We're assuming the accident happened in bad weather," a civil aviation spokesman told Reuters.

Rescue workers found the wreckage of the twin-prop Short C-23 Sherpa aircraft near Mariara, the agency said.

Venezuelan Military Plane Crashes, Killing 25, Union Radio Says

Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) -- A Venezuelan military plane crashed yesterday afternoon as it approached its base in the central industrial state of Aragua, killing all 25 on board, Union Radio reported.

The propeller plane, a Short Brothers SD3-30, was on route to Maracay in Aragua state from La Orchila island off the Venezuelan coast, Union Radio said.

The plane was several miles from the base when it disappeared from radar screens, Union Radio reported. The crash may have occurred because of bad weather, the radio network said. An investigation is under way.

Venezuela's last major air accident occurred in January 2001 when a DC-3 belonging to Rutaca Airlines crashed, killing 24.

mainstream indymedia?

24.08.2004 09:05

sorry but what is this stuff? is this site going to be filled with indypendent coverage or just with that commercial news? if i would want to read that i could do so, but i don't want to; so i read indymedia and what do i get here? same shit, different URL...

indymedia is not just about linking massmedia information, it's about doing it yourself.

i'm reposting useful and meaningful info

25.08.2004 00:51

and stuff that u have to dig around a long time for, when it comes to venezuela. the fact this is from a mainstream source makes it more pertinent. i'd love to hear more about this rather suspicious plane crash from someone like an eyewitness, but we'll just have to make do.

this is indymedia, and more precisely the temp eng-lang venez indymedia site. if u knew anything about the propaganda war in venezuela u would understand why knowledge of what the corporate media is saying and the way they're saying it is vital if we want to help counter the lies and disinformation.

basically, if u don't like the thread, or aren't interested in it, then click elsewhere; otherwise, stop littering up the page. peace.
