Ernest Barraquias Jr. | 24.08.2004 12:17 | Repression | Social Struggles

The hunger strike of Ernest Barraquias Jr. is to press the top officials of the law-enforcement agencies of the Philippines to conduct investigations on several kid-slay attempts on him. Suspects include members of the Philippine National Police & the National Bureau of Investigation. Although there was a ransom demand on the last abduction attempt on him, the attempts to kidnap-slay him is believed to be related to his coming out in the open and exposing the activities of a big drug syndicate that used his company’s legitimate operations to distribute confiscated drugs back to the market. He & his nephew-dependent Richswaze were held virtual hostages in the last 3 years.

Although many high-ranking public officials are now aware of his plight and of his hunger strike, there are still no concrete actions being pursued to satisfy his simple demand for a Senate or Congressional probe or a trustworthy investigation by the government investigative bodies on his existing complaints. Ernest & his nephew-dependent Richswaze survived several assassination attempts on them. Furthermore, members of the big drug syndicate who infiltrated his company & who became employees committee massive theft of funds and stocks. Even their local bank manager, known to be close to some suspects and is very influential, connived and opened an illegal/bogus account named to Ernest’s company NuStaples Co. Ltd. where more than a million of the company’s legitimate funds were deposited & withdrawn by the same suspects. Same bank manager committed so many acts of fraud against the company like making illegal withdrawals from the company’s other accounts.

Ernest Barraquias Jr, is the President and majority owner of NuStaples Co. Ltd., one of the Philippines fastest growing small companies distributing mostly imported paper products nationwide. It also has government contracts. More witnesses expressed desire to testify but are still very scared for their lives.
Suspects and their collaborators inserted millions worth of methampetamine hydrochloride in the companies product boxes for scheduled & unscheduled deliveries to certain clients in certain cities. Stolen funds were also used to finance the suspects local drug trade.

In Context

The Philippines is recently ranked by a United Nations concerned agency as the 3rd biggest producer & exporter of "shabu" or methampetamine hydrochloride in the world after China and Myanmar. Seizures of the same drug in the country reached a peak & record-breaking 300million US dollars last year, prior to this year's national elections. The FBI considers the country a leading source of the instantly addictive drug becoming extremely popular in parts of the US, through the Filipino community. Locally, some officials developed new distribution networks to avoid conflicts (& detection) with other traffickers / drug dealers.
