XXI Century
we're screening this epic documentary in seven one-hour episodes over the weekend. This will be the film's premiere in Sheffield and the directors - Gabriele Zamparini and Lorenzo Meccoli - will be here to present their work.
www.TheCatsDream.com
4th World War
an awesome film that brings together the inspiring images and the poetry of worldwide social struggles against neoliberalism. It keenly shows a system that is increasingly dependent on violence and the so-called "war on terror" in order to sustain its world order.
www.bignoisefilms.com
Kilometer Zero
Cancun anti-capitalist action against the 2003 WTO summit in Mexico.
In Whose Interest
a powerful overview examining the effect of US foreign policy on the lives of people in Central America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East - David Kaplowitz, the director, will be in Sheffield to talk about this documentary and we will be showing two more of his film shorts.
www.inwhoseinterest.org
Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election
is the riveting story about how Dubya stole the 2000 US Presidential Election. Given the controversy surrounding the 2004 election this film will be a timely reminder of the fiasco of the last!
Genoa Red Zone
a hard-hitting film presenting the real story of the bloody anti-G8 demonstrations that happened in Genoa in 2001. Eight months in the making with a cast of thousands this hour-long documentary does not shy from the truth.
Outfoxed
Rupert Murdoch's Fox news, as we all suspect, were found to be writing the news, not reporting it! This film reveals the secrets of former Fox employees as they talk about how they were forced to push a "right wing" point of view or risk their jobs.
www.disinfo.com
Chlorine
a bad ass skate documentary featuring all the old punk skateboarders checking out places to skate pools, posing as cleaners, avoiding police, whatever... to get access to pools and reclaim space in their urban landscape for skating. Features Lance Mountain, Duane Peters, Steve Olson, Tony Alva and lots more.
http://freak-designs.com/chlorine/

Plus lots of shorts/direct action films - such as the Fairford film where an anti-war activists coach gets hijacked by the police; DSEi, action against the arms fair in London; back by popular demand - Crowd Bites Wolf - screened in Sheffield at the Lost Film Fest last November, Pie's the Limit - a cornucopia of political pie throwings; The Price of Tea - a film by two Sheffield Indymedia volunteers visiting India.

Also VJ-ing by media activists from Sheffield and the UK.

help with publicity???

03.11.2004 14:21

I just thought that I would drop a line to encourage people who are checking out the festival to let others know about it - be they community groups, trade unions, students, socities etc etc. Just anyone really. Let them know about this festival. We can only do so much publicity ourselves so help us out. We need help via word of mouth and the internet.

Slap the information of the festival onto internet messageboards, email your friends, students - perhaps you can access your student email at college or university and let every student know about this event.

sounds great, what about adding this...

11.11.2004 13:05

This sounds fantastic and everyone should try to get there over the weekend. One question though, I have looked at the programme and there doesn’t seem to be any films whatsoever on basic domestic issues like poverty, drug addiction, housing, etc. Iinternational politics and direct action are very important issues , but they are not the only things happening.

Even at this late stage, why not get in touch with Silence Breaker films, they have made short films about the lives of working class youth in Rotherham which everyone should see.

Looking Good

13.11.2004 11:58

Just been down there, the Sheffield Indymedia Alternative Documentary Festival has got off to a flying start throughout Friday, with over 100 people coming through the festival. They watched a variety of films which stimulated, excited, challenged and and entertained them. The directors of many of the film were there to answer questions about their films and many people stayed after the films (often passionately) to debate discuss and constructively challenge the films and the filmmakers. The excellent café offered a cool range of snacks, light meals and other refreshments, and no rip off prices either. One such film is '21st Century' an incredibly detailed analysis over seven one hout segments of our world today.

The festival is on til Sunday night, come down and experience it for yourself.

We need more of this

15.11.2004 21:41

I'd like to congratulate Indymedia Sheffield on a job well done this weekend. alt.doc.fest presented an important alternative to the views projected at mainstream festivals supported by mainstream money. I really enjoyed meeting Gabriele Zamparini & Lorenzo Meccoli who have experienced a great deal of animosity against their courageous film XXI Century.

This event made me reflect on my own activism and made me think that now more than ever, in this new age of unashamed self censorship, we need to continue to support these last frontiers of freedom of expression and analysis.

Looking forward to the next one.

love
