BAe blockaded in Edinburgh

glasgow anti war action | 15.12.2004 13:11 | Anti-militarism | World

Glasgow Anti War Action struck for the second day in a row yesterday when they blockaded BAe System's factory in Edinburgh. This is the facility at which they make components for cluster bombs. On Monday, the same network were involved in shutting down Weir Pumps for pillaging Iraq, and because of their connections with Halliburton.

9 activists were locked on, and three gates closed at the BAe factory. Severe disruption resulted though no arrests were made. The activists remained for over three hours until the traffic began to flow through another gate, and the activists decided to move on, with the pledge that this was just the start of a new campaign of direct action targeting war profiteers in Scotland. Weir and BAe can look out...

Workers were very supportive at Weir, but we cant say the same about BAe where workers didnt take our leaflets, and some threatened to assault activists but were prevented by the police presence...the irony!

There has once again been extensive coverage in the mainstream scottish press.

Once again, Faslane Peace Camp activists were involved. Please visit FPC which needs visitors urgently. Ring 01436 820901 or email  faslanepeacecamp@hotmail.com

From Scotland to Brighton . . .

Nice one! Congratulations from Brighton - lets kickstart a campaign of direct action against the war profiteers nationwide! Down here we've got a firm called EDO MBM who make bomb release mechanisms and parts for the Paveway series of bombs who we're going to shut down. Good luck people, lets shut down the war industry!

Really ?

Yet another curious posting from the Faslane group claiming actions in Scotland which upon further investigation seem not to be all they report.

A quick phone call soon revealed the truth - two people tried to lock on to the gates, security stopped them. They stood outside for 5 minutes with a poster but the rain caused the ink to run so they went home.

Seriously people let's not claim things that didn't happen. The lies are always exposed in the end. I appreciate Faslane no linger has any full time participants and only 3 or 4 part time ones but this is not the way to try and get support.

The truth never hurts.

Actually, the activists were locked on outside Weir Pumps on Monday for five hours.

It is true that Faslane Peace Camp does need visitors however. (Glasgow Anti War Action carried out this action involving some FPC folk, but also folk who were members of other groups including For Mother Earth, Trident Ploughshares and individuals.) Faslane can be contacted on 01436 820 901

Nice one!

It's really heartening to read these pages and see that so much direct action is going on these days. It's really healthy.

To the person who phoned up the company and said "did those protesters get the better of your" and the company said "no, we had it all under control" (paraphrasing, obviously) well **what did you expect them to say?** Since when have the people being protested against been a reliable source of information?

Yes, Really!

What a pile of lies and poo written by 'not convinced'.

5 minutes? poster? stopped by security?

No one needed to lock onto the gates because activists locked on across the main gates through pipes. Pedestrian turnstiles and one side gate were additionally locked using D-locks and chains which security eventually cut with boltcroppers. During this time press attended and it received hourly coverage on radio bulletins.

Workers and passers-by were left in no doubt that BAE Systems were being highlighted for profitting out of the war in Iraq, their poor record on arms sales to countries with appalling human rights records, and recent allegations of corruption. (See CAAT website for more info.) Leaflets were given out stating "BAE Systems fuelling war...arm in arms with UK and US governments".

There was a large banner (the ink didn't run!) reading "BAE killing for profit", although due to the high winds it couldn't be tied up for long.

Despite being wet and cold the main gates were blockaded from 7am to 10.30am.

Oh, and the Peace camp does have full time residents...

Faslane camp has no full time residents anymore. Internal arguments and a very messy three way relationship led to its demise.

Was once at Faslane

As of a couple of days ago there was at least one person claiming to live permanently at Faslane and is actively calling for more people to move there to keep the camp open.

This is not the first time the numbers of people living at the camp have dropped to such levels...and it won't be the last.

Rather than trying to stir it - the most important thing is to work out what we can do to help keep the camp going...

I'd like to start by suggesting that if anyone reading this has time over the holiday season why not pop over to Faslane for a visit, and if you can manage to take some food and a drink and some firewood, I'm sure it would be appreciated.

Plus - solstice party at Faslane on Tuesday - anyone interetsed in going?

Viva Faslania!

Was once at Faslane too
