Faslane Protest Camp Closed

Jane and Liana | 06.02.2005 12:26 | Anti-militarism

The Faslane protest camp closed last night for the last time.

Despite many requests for help the camp was finaly torn down and abandoned last night. We were the last two to leave.

Although we feel much was achieved at Faslane there is a feeling of bitternes and resentment that we were not better supported. We didn't ask for much, just an occasional donation, some materials, food perhaps but in the last four months we have received nothing.

The subs with the murderous WMD's are still there, could you have done more to stop them ?

as you say, the subs with the nukes are still there so even though the camp has gone the issue hasn't. has your active opposition ended with the end of the camp or are you going to continue opposition by other means?

Shame

06.02.2005 14:53

I was at the camp two weeks ago and it was obvious it didn't have long. The MoD policy change which saw the camp being ignored rather than confronted was effective as it meant that those who used to visit hoping for an argument or fight with the security staff now had nobody to confront and as such they stopped coming.

It must be said that like Greenham, Faslane became too centred on women's issues rather than the fight against nuclear weapons and for some there was a lifestyle choice.

Peace

BAD NEWS

06.02.2005 16:02

If this is true, then it is really really bad news. But this is the first report I have seen, and there has been no mainstream coverage as there blatantly would be after if the 23 year old permanent protest camp closed.

FASLANE CAMP IS STILL ALIVE AND KICKING TRIDENT BUTT

06.02.2005 16:50

This newswire is wrong. Indymedia, please remove it as it is misinformation.

Faslane Peace Camp has been in existence for 23 years and I have just had it on good word from those very close to the camp, that the camp is still going and is involved with a lot of direct action against Trident, Weir Pumps and the occupation of Iraq.

You can phone the camp on 01436 820 901 or email them on  faslanepeacecamp@hotmail.com
The camp does need visitors too, and even if you can only stay a day...go along.

On July 4th, there will be a mass direct action at Faslane to highlight the links between destructive economic globalisation and militarism. see www.tridentploughshares.org/g8

Latest News

06.02.2005 20:02

At about 7 this evening I spoke with a number of people who were until last night still trying to keep the camp open. It seems there have been problems for some time about keeping a full time presence there because of a lack of volunteers and money. The decision to ban men from the camp was considered wrong by a number of people and probably was the biggest single contribution to a number of regular financial contributions drying up.

The Trident Ploughshares group wanted to maintain a virtual camp ie website etc with a view to re-establishing a regular presence in the future and to ensure what little money does come in continues to do so however this was felt to be dishonest as it would give the impression of a camp where none existed. This could be dangerous if people traveled there expecting others to be around.

If sufficient people are prepared to make a long term commitment (at least 10) the camp can be reopended. All the donated equipment is in storage and safe. Attempts by the MOD to take some tents etc were resisted.

It does seem sad that this is probably the end at Faslane but we can be proud of what they achieved and the great times a number of us had there. We kept the public's attention on Britain's WMD's when the government would have liked them forgotten.

mistakes

06.02.2005 23:08

1) Faslane Peace Camp wasnt/isnt women only
2) Trident Ploughshares is an ongoing campaign of nvda and never had a permamnent presence at the base, but does have regular summer camps
3) Having spoken to SCND today, I can confirm they no nothing of the camp ending...
this still sounds like bollocks to me. it has not been on bbc scotland either.

Latest news

07.02.2005 11:15

As a result of the recent publicity concerning the closure a number of people are trying to get the camp back up and active by the summer. Many of the problems have been caused by infighting between the groups who have supported the permanent camp so it has been suggested that the new camp be independent of CND, Ploughshares etc.

Further info will be posted after a meeting late next week between interested parties.

Thanks

07.02.2005 13:36

A big thanks to everyone who kept the space going for so long. I was never able to visit but a friend who was there last year spoke of the atmosphere, love and commitment that was created.

It may be gone but let us all focus on the good that was achieved.

Money

07.02.2005 15:26

We never thought we would see the day when those we thought of as our friends would try and make us out as liars just to keep money coming into their organisation. We were the ones who took the site down, we didn't sit in a house nearby debating the "honesty" of claiming a protest site was still active if it lived in people's hearts !

The original post was designed to inform those who had supported us in the past and may well wish to come along in the future that there would be nobody there. The dishonesty I have witnesed over this issue has been astonishing, I never thought people in our movement would lie just to ensure donations continue.

When I posted the original notice I decided not to list the details of the disagrements and arguments as I felt it was unhelpfull and counter productive to the bigger issue. If we are again called liars I will do so.

Jane and Liana

We're trying to find out what's going on...

Just to let folks know that people in the Indymedia UK collective are trying to get to the bottom of this. We'll publish any *confirmed* information as soon as we have it...

Very sad

07.02.2005 17:55

What a shame and what a waste that the camp could not be kept open. I'm not surprised that there was a lack of physical support, it is a long way from anywhere but financial help could have been made available from a number of sources. Did the group get anything from the local CND branch ?

Sad

Faslane Peace Camp is still open

07.02.2005 17:56

Faslane Peace Camp is still open.

This afternoon two CND activists from Helensburgh checked on the camp because they were not answering phone calls.

Five people are currently resident there. None of the ten caravans, the fort, the communal lodge, the sheds, the kitchen shelter or the two buses that are permantly at the site have been removed, 'taken down' or scrapped in any way.

Earlier messages stating the camp has been closed are totally false.

There have been no meetings/discussions between Trident Ploughshares, Scottish CND or Faslane Peace Camp about closing the camp.

Campers have been involved in actions recently and are planning future actions. Reports of their early demise are misgrounded.

I give my name and contact details in full below so that anyone who wishes to contact me on this issue can do so.

Indymedia Response

07.02.2005 19:12

We've looked into this and several reliable sources have confirmed that this is bollocks. FASLANE PEACE CAMP IS OPEN! See  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/02/304933.html for some more details.

Someone is obviously deliberately spreading mis-information about faslane, so remember kids, DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON AN OPEN POSTING NEWSWIRE!

We've hidden this post from the newswire and will continue to hide comments and posts from people who are talking crap about faslane.

:-)

Someone has it in for the camp

07.02.2005 19:20

Someone has it in for the camp, publishing this kind of rubbish. Why say the camp is closed when it is OPEN AND ACTIVE?

I think that whoever you are perhaps is fucked in the head and needs to see some kind of councillor, yeh...

Viva Faslania!
