Selfridges Go Fur-Free!!

West Midlands Animal Action | 19.05.2005 23:51 | Animal Liberation | Birmingham

Selfridges have today(19-5-05) emailed the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade(CAFT) to confirm that following the long campaign, they have now stopped selling all real fur! (See Selfridges statement below)

Selfridges had been selling rabbit fur, claiming it was a 'by product' of the meat trade, but following weekly (and sometimes daily) protests outside the stores in London, Manchester and here in Birmingham they have finally come to their senses. This is yet another major victory as Selfridges are one of the most influential names in fashion. This success follows on from CAFT campaigns against Harvey Nichols, Zara and Snow + Rock, all of which saw many demos at their Birmingham stores!

Over the past year, West Midlands Animal Action have held numerous demos outside Selfridges newest store in Birmingham`s Bull Ring. Our most recent demo, was just 4 days ago, as part of the National Week of Action against Selfridges. A total of 25 protesters staged a 4 hour demo, when over 2,500 leaflets were handed out to the general public and a dancing, drumming rabbit entertained the crowds on New Street!! To read a full report about this protest, including many pictures, see the WMAA website below.

WMAA would like to say a big thankyou to everyone who has taken part in this campaign, including all those that have contacted Selfridges to complain and everyone that has attended demos in Birmingham. We have no doubt that the Birmingham demos helped CAFT achieve this mammoth victory!!

Selfridges management have released the following written statement on their new fur-free policy.

Statement from Selfridges & Co.

17th May 2005
CHANGE TO FUR POLICY

BACKGROUND

Selfridges has reviewed its policy on fur and will no longer be selling any fur products in its stores. This will come into force with immediate effect.

This policy revision was made after taking into account customer feedback and a decline in demand for fur related products.

The official statement for the revised policy is as follows:

Selfridges Fur Policy

“Selfridges does not sell fur in any of its stores.”

Well done to everyone who has been involved in this. Although fur sales are climbing each year one more big shop being forced by our intimidation to stop is very positive. Now we need to deal with those people who are still wearing fur, they must understand that our view is the only one we care about, we reject their right to a choice and will terrorise them until they agree with us.

Well done

Campaigners have not intimidated or terrorised anyone

Very sarcastic but you clearly know very little about the Birmingham campaign against Selfridges. No protesters have intimidated or terrorised anyone. Our campaign, like most animal rights campaigns, was based on making the general public aware of exactly how Selfridges obtain real fur. There can be no doubt that fur farming is cruel, and most people are against cruelty, and many thousands of people have supported this campaign on that basis. Because they care about animals suffering, they have contacted Selfridges to complain. It is those customer complaints that Selfridges have responded to, nothing to do with terrorists!!

The fur industry would have you believe that fur sales are on the rise again, but this is simply a myth, aimed at creating the impression that it`s `ok` to buy fur again.

It`s a funny kind of terrorist that wears an animal costume, hands out leaflets, holds a banner, uses a megaphone etc. Real terrorism involves killing or harming people, did you see any of that happening in Birmingham??!

Why on earth should people have the choice to be cruel to animals?! Should that choice then be extended to cruelty to humans also. The choice to rape, molest, beat up etc? Should that choice be extended to the environment. The choice to pollute, destroy, contaminate, to kill the planet?!

WMAA have never and will never be involved in the terrorising or intimidating of people because they wear fur. We don`t get into confrontations with people, we educate the 1,000`s of people who do want to listen to the truth about animal cruelty.

Take a look at our website to see the other campaigns we are involved in.
