Save Dale Farm- traveller site to be evicted

traveller support | 25.05.2005 16:56

The biggest site in the country is coming up for eviction - help stop this ethinic cleansing!

SAVE DALE FARM
Public Meeting Sunday 29th May 1pm @ Ramparts, Rampart St. off Commercial
road near Aldgate East.

The largest Traveller site in the country with over a thousand residents,
Dale Farm in Crays Hill, near Basildon and Wickford, Essex, is under
threat of eviction. Basildon council will make a decision by the 28th of
May, but have already paid bailiff company Constant and Co £20,000 to make
a plan for eviction. The whole site is not facing immediate eviction but
around 40 - 60 families are. The council is planning to spend a million
and a half of ratepayers money to make these families homeless. After Dale
Farm there really is nowhere to go.

Dale Farm has been a refuge in the last few years for families evicted
from other sites. The impossible odds of actually receiving planning
permission for Traveller sites (over 90% rate of refusal) means brutal and
violent evictions across the country. The size of Dale Farm was an attempt
to find safety in numbers, which is soon to be stripped away. The right
wing press has made headlines in the last few months claiming that the
Gypsy - Traveller community is using Human Rights law for their own
benefit. The European Convention on Human Rights does protect the rights
of communities to live in a way that is culturally significant to them,
and also stops people being moved away from vital services. Children will
lose their education through eviction, the ill will lose their medical
treatment, the elderly will lose their care.

Thank God the council is finaly moving them out. The damage that has been done to the natural environment, the trees, the path of a river and the famous bluebell wood is incaculable.

With the help of the local community I am sure given time the entire area can be restored to the local beauty spot it once was and enjoyed by all the local people.

Wonder what damage to the environment was comitted whilst building you and your neighbours houses eh resident?

Look back in history. See what was probably beautiful lush land before bigots like you moved in.

That's the trouble with us homosapiens, we all need somewhere to trash.

Think about it

(Sigh)

OK let me explain this slowly. The world needs housing, to enable the community to have areas without housing for the social good we need planning laws to protect areas. These people have ignored those laws, ignored the natural environment, ignored the wishes of the wider community, ignored basic human decency and decided that their wishes and desires out weigh everybody elses.

I realise it suits your argument to portray me and some Middle Class NIMBY bigot but nothing is further from the truth, I am a commited environmentalist who has seen this area ruined by those too selfish to respect it.

They are not being "ethnicly cleansed" or "persecuted" as I have seen written about them. They are being asked to respect the laws relating to the protection of wildlife areas and if you can't see the importance of protecting Britain's natural world for the benefit of future generations I feel sorry for you.

It's funny, when road development is announced or a new building scheme started the collective forces of the UK activist world are quick to try and stop it. When a group of travellers ruin a wonderful piece of woodland and intimidate the local community nobody says a thing, in fact many even defend the travellers who have done this.

I don't know what to say anymore. My heart is heavy

Mike,

It is important to remember the rules of the activist community.

1 Anything done by any form of authority (government, local council etc) is always wrong. Even if it has the support of the majority of the population

2. Anybody who could do with a good wash is to be supported.

3. Trees, flowers, old building etc - although we talk a good talk about protecting these things, what we really mean is we will use them as excuses to stop something that can make life better for those who have a lifestyle we don't agree with.

4. Just be bloody difficult. Think of Activism as the last stages of being a teenager. After a while the majority grow up and lead good lives. Some just go on winning for a long time.
