G8 - Essential Things To Bring With You

ghate | 06.06.2005 17:15 | G8 2005 | Globalisation

Apart from the obvious statement of "bring what you would expect to find" there are some key essentials that people visiting Scotland should bring:

A mobile phone - obvious really.

A Tent to sleep in - obvious really (* see below).

Walking Boots - the countryside can be rough and wet. Bring a compass and get a good map if you intend to go hiking.

Vehicles - it will be quite a challenge getting around from A to B, especially if public transport is full to capacity or closed by the police, so if you can bring a vehicle, do so.

Waterproofs - it will be sunny but it might rain in Scotland, in fact it rains a lot in scotland and the weather can change very quickly. It will still be sunny, so maybe bring suncream :-)

Insect Repellant - the 'midges' in the countryside can reduce a grown man to tears. One of the best defences believe it or not is Avon 'Skin So Soft Soft & Fresh Dry Oil Body Spray'.
NB police are unlikely to us CS gas so normal recommendations like in europe and the US etc not to wear oil based products like sun cream does not apply.

-------------------------

This is a basic list for people wanting to come to scotland.

There are lots of lists of what you should bring for protests etc that include things like first aid kits, maps, bottles of water, food for the day etc

There is also legal issues about what to bring - for example unlike most of Europe there is no need to carry ID or Passports in Scotland / England. For people who are camping it's worth noting that while it is not unlawful to carry a folding penknife of up to three inches long (76 mm), it could still be construed as an offensive weapon depending on circumstances. Knives that flick in to position or that lock are not penknives. It is best not to carry any knife or bladed item at all.

* It's also worth noting that wild camping and squatting buildings is illegal in Scotland, however it is expected that there will be several campsites set up for accommodation.

For more information on these and other issues see:

Endless list

Not much point taking a tent if you have arranged to sleep on somebodies floor in Edinburgh and if you are plannin to wander around the countryside with your walkin boots and a tent, you might want to consider taking a map.

While on the suject of useful stuff, why not take an little pocket FM radio receiver so you can tune into the hourly news for clues about whats going on where.

why is everyone on this IndyMedia so high and mighty?

06.06.2005 20:27

Ok so you lot may be more experienced, but I'm sure you'd hope more than just the usual suspects would go to the events. If they read IndyMedia I think most people would be put off going.

Transportation
contact: driventodissent (at) go4.it

We will need masses of transport, as the convergence space is unlikely to be accessible by public transport. We are asking that all local groups consider renting mini-buses for the period of the convergence, and that they have additional drivers who can help with tranposrt. Renting a mini-bus is actually a cheap way for a group of people to get up to Scotland.

Other items we need include:

* Drivers (regular, and those with a bus license)
* Buses (large and small)
* Bicycles
* Lifts across country with equipment

Catering/Kitchen

* any other potentially useful kitchen tat from pans and utensils to tupperware
* any (pref vegan) food donations - bulk veg, grains, mueslis, oil, ...
* If every vehicle coming could bring along a sack of something they were able to get for free locally, that'd be great!!!
* any contacts to suppliers that might be able to give us larger discounts or free extras, pref. local
* shedloads of pallets (for food storage and against bogginess)
* marquees to cook in!
* self-organised kitchens, and cooking crews

Jerk!

Just because you are clearly such a veteran campaigner, "Grown Up", doesn't mean that everyone else is. Your silly sarcasm just reveals the pillock that you quite clearly are.

The saddest thing is that it's people like you and such attitudes that are the prime stumbling blocks to any attempts at progress...

To Grown Up:
You can't be that grown up if you think that all activists instinctively know survival skills relevant to living outside of big cities. I remember at earth first gatherings in Snowdonia, loads of people would take great care to bring their grunge look rainbow coloured wooly jumpers full of holes but would turn up without any waterproof clothing in one of the wettest parts of the country. They brought psychotic dogs that would then run loose chasing sheep all over the mountains, no source of light to help them put up their tents in the near total darkness and so on. Scottish midges are something that most city dwellers just have no experience of. I wish I could agree that people don't need to be told the bleeding obvious, but believe me many do.

I'd add to the list a lightweight trowel so that you can bury your disgusting shit properly instead of allowing flies to frolic on it & then crawl all over your food.

hi de hi

Is there a map for the summit?

06.06.2005 21:57

I'd heard someone had got ordinance survey maps with Gleneagles in the middle to avoid having to have two of the area. Anyone know how to get them?
