Sam | 17.06.2005 11:16

The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are a celebration of sport, culture and education. But more than that, they draw nations together in a celebration of humanity - a celebration of friendship.

On FriendShip Day - 25 June - a whole day of events will take place in Greenwich - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and London 2012 venue.

12.00 Aerial Performers curl, dance and make gravity defying drops in the rigging of the Cutty Sark, exploring the danger and exhilaration of travelling by water, and the celebration of arrival.

12.00-4.00 Family fun activities at the National Maritime Museum.

12.00-6.30 Ignite! FriendShip focused artistic creations by young people from maritime Greenwich, Plymouth and Bristol by the Cutty Sark.

12.15-4.00 Family fun activities aboard the Cutty Sark*.

12.30 Start of The FriendShip Stroll. A sponsored walk around Greenwich Park in aid of the conservation of the Cutty Sark.

12.30-6.30 Try an Olympic sport for yourself. Everything from Football to Athletics, Rowing to Cycling in organised sessions in Greenwich Park. State-of-the-art equipment allows you to check your sprint speed, and the radar speed cage measures the speed of your kick or throw. Or get kitted out and try your hand at Judo.

1.00 Aerial Performers in the rigging of Cutty Sark.

1.00-3.00 Roaming story tellers in Greenwich Park tell fascinating tales from around the globe, including National Youth Theatre performing short stories based on sea voyages.

1.00-2.30 Make your own flag in workshops in Greenwich Park.

2.00-2.30 Youth Music Choirs. The National Youth Choir of Great Britain, Enfield Sings Choir and Brent Music Service team up on stage in Greenwich Park to perform brand new multicultural songs, showing that friendship can cross geographical, cultural and age barriers.

2.30 Aerial Performers in the rigging of Cutty Sark.

3.00-4.30 'Where the River Meets the Sea'. A spectacular procession in the Park. Over 250 young people in carnival costume create a sea of colour and movement by animating silk flags and dancing to the rhythms of the Kinetika Bloco. Join the procession in a huge performance that celebrates giving,
receiving and friendship.

4.30-5.00 Youth Music Choirs. The choirs on stage for their second performance of the day.

5.00-6.15 Doctor Carnival's Five Ring Circus. A joyous, celebration on stage featuring over 100 performers. As Doctor Carnival works his magic, the show switches from samba and salsa, calypso and reggae, to bhangra, West African rhythms and the township music of South Africa without missing a beat - a real cross-cultural participatory show and a truly unique experience.

6.30-7.00 The Kinetika Bloco drummers. The amazing drummers take to the stage in Greenwich Park.

9.30 The Maritime Mysteries staged by the Greenwich + Docklands International Festival will take place at Lower Grand Square at the Old Royal Naval College, a moving setting for a free performance combining music, puppetry, aerial theatre and special effects. A great end to an amazing day.

There will be catering in the Park throughout the day offering a variety of picnic food and drink.*
