London 2012

Ian | 26.06.2005 08:07

A message from Seb Coe

There's now just 10 days until we find
out if London will be given the honour
of hosting the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The race is too close to call but our
campaign has come a long way in the
past 12 months and your support has
been a vital part of that.

The IOC vote takes place in Singapore
on 6 July, and we expect the results to
be announced at about 12.45pm British Summer Time.

Some very special guests will be
appearing at Trafalgar Square in London,
and keep an eye out for other events up
and down the country.

The decision will also be broadcast
live on BBC television - we hope you'll
be tuning in to join us.

Ian

Regretfully this is a done deal, everyone knows that London has won, they've even started work on the buildings. I suppose Coe has to continue with the charade of "Too close to call" but it's all over bar the shouting

Pissed Off

horay!

I hate the olympics, lots of people trying to beat each other, the assumption that sport means competition, that winners are the only people of value and the passivity of the spectators.

I love watching the gymnasts show us all what our bodies are capable of, I hate watching them then be made to feel as though their contribution was worthless because they got 98% rather than 99%.

I really don't care if it happens in London or pluto.... i'll be kicking a football around or doing handstands to the setting sun with my friends somewhere, miles from any TV or "YourNameHereFor$$$"Stadium...

London 2012

It was one of those moments when
The London sky just switches, in a shift from grey to blue
And, after weeks of freezing blankness when
The East End streets slid dully under you
And grid-locked drivers shivered in their steely cars,
And cats sat sullenly on dripping walls -
The whole thing changed, like that

I was walking near the marshes in the playing fields at the time
Plodding over pitches in the unpoetic grime
Of what was due to be a coach park, or olympic blocks of flats
And gazing at the Gherkin, and thinking, well, that's that
They've held this place for centuries, this common piece of land
Nothing lasts for ever, and whatever, things come round again
And as I turned resignedly, away from the designedly
Approaching blocks and towers, while shrugging at the flowers
The sky went blue, like that.

And all the trees waved joyously, in warm gold light, like sun
And all the flowers rioted; the small red houses smiled down on
The people coming out to hear
Their grass shout out a vast green cheer
And all the concrete massed behind
And all its blacks and greys combined
Could not withstand this piece of land
Which blazed out local colour, with our roses in its hands.
