Faslane on BBC lunchtime news

despatch | 04.07.2005 11:58

The protest at Faslane has just been reported on the BBC lunchtime news

Described as "two or three hundred protestors" the report which had no pictures said that a small number of people briefly visited the Faslane base before leaving earlier today. It reported what was described as "hard core anarchists" numbering some "twenty or thirty" were hanging around trying to cause trouble but were being contained by police

yeah the bbc report is aout right. some of the stuff here reported about the faslane demo was just crap. one report said there were thousands there but thats just not true

we were there about an hour before returning to the camp site in edinburgh, there were about 8 people left when we went

Some reality please

Once again we are seeing stupid claims about numbers for all the events in Scotland. I don't know why people do this but the protests at Faslane are just the latest example. Let's have a level of honesty everybody. OK there where not as many people there as we all would have liked ( I guess perhaps 150 -200 before most went back to the main camps) but that is still something to celebrate. Inflating the numbers to "thousands" just makes everyone look foolish when the pictures are printed.

We need to face facts about the protests not just at Faslane but in Scotland as a whole, numbers are way down on what was expected, the core support is there as usual but we need to do more to attract all those who have not turned up despite showing interest. It's all about education of the issues not exagerating numbers to make ourselves feel better

Laura is right I'm sorry to say

The amount of people here is a lot less than I expected. I suppose the venue was a pain to reach for those on the european mainland but I expected more from the UK.

Some people had done a lot of work to secure crash spaces etc and too see so much of it empty is just heartbreaking.

Where is everyone ?

What did you expect ?

So much of the so called protest was obviously government organised of course people didn't want to go and play their part in the charade.

too many groups fell right into the trap set for them

Not surprised

Well there certainly weren't "thousands" there, but there were also a lot more than 150-200. Perhaps you are estimating the number for one gate? There were hundreds at each gate, though certainly not at the level that organisers had predicted.

On a positive note, all of the base gates were shut totally from 7 am to 4.30 pm, which isn't half bad!

Matt

P.S. As to the comments slagging off the convergence spaces and so on that have been provided, I can only conclude that the people commenting are (surprise surprise) sitting on their arses and are not actually here. There are plenty of non state provided spaces to stay - most of them nowhere near full. Mostly because cynics like you have written off the event before it even starts.
