London Underground attacks "almost certainly" related to Al Quaeda

Katie Lowe | 07.07.2005 10:37

The BBC have revealed in the last few minutes that their sources believe the terrorist attacks in London are "almost certainly the work of Al Quaeda."

At least six explosions have taken place in London, and it is believed that there are at least twenty fatalities and ninety injuries, according to police in London. The BBC believe this is now the work of terrorist organisation Al Quaeda.

The attacks took place on Edgeware Road, Kings Cross, Liverpool Street, Aldgate East and Moorgate, and a bus exploded in Russell Square, injuring many people both on the bus and passers by.

All transport has been disabled and people in London are asked not to call the emergency services unless involved in a very serious incident.

Under Seige

I'm currently in the middle of it.
There doesn't seem to be much panic, just loads of city boys moaning about "the inconvenience".
Quite bizarre that they choose to hit London when both Bush and Blair are in Scotland.

al quaeda al schmaeda

07.07.2005 11:26

read the true history of al-quaeda and then replace this virtually made up term with 'secret security forces' - also think about who stands most to gain to hit london while bush and blair are in gleneagles under immense pressure from world opinion. either "al-quaeda" have done yet another fantastic tactical own goal, or someone else has been very clever. watch africa issues get sidestepped. watch the tabloid clamour for id cards start up. watch even more civil liberties go up in smoke. watch the 'war on terror' step up. i wouldn't be all that surprised if there appears an iranian connection to these explosions. wake up!!

Such a perfect democracy...

07.07.2005 11:29

“Such a perfect democracy constructs its own inconceivable foe, terrorism. Its wish is to be judged by its enemies rather than by its results. The story of terrorism is written by the state and it is therefore highly instructive. The spectators must certainly never know everything about terrorism, but they must always know enough to convince them that, compared with terrorism, everything else must be acceptable, or in any case more rational and democratic.” Comments on the Society of the Spectacle

this does appear, at first glance, to be hugely convenient, timewise.

Al Qaeda a western invention

07.07.2005 12:25

I highly recommend the excellent BBC documentary 'the Power of Nightmares' which demonstrates pretty conclusively that the concept of a highly co-ordinated global network of islamist 'terrorist' cells called 'Al Qaeda' is as much an invention of the global ruling class as McCarthy's 'reds under the bed' scare. Interesting that the same sort of investigation of anti-establishment political groups and crackdown on civil liberties resulted from both scaremongering campaigns.

The taking of life is reprehensible regardless of the supposed justifications. But I think it's pertinent to remind people that if breaking news took over all programming every time 100 ordinary people were killed in Aghanistan, Iraq, Colombia, Mexico by state-funded 'terrorists' (military and mercenary) there would never be a return to regularly scheduled programming.

I wondered how it would be until some fucking retard turned up here and shouted "conspiracy".

Arsehole.

Indeed

07.07.2005 12:40

Indeed, whilst not being a conspiracy lover... my first impression is that it is terribly convienient that Al Qaida are assuming responsibility. What possible tactical gain can there be? Doesnt bode well for the counties the USA are considering targeting for their war on terror next does it? Then again, my knowledge of terrorist movement eidos is limited.
Perhaps as a 'precautionary meausure', the UK govt should isolate and question all the USA special forces flying in through Prestwick. Now that is total conjecture!!!
Strenghtens my resolve that non voilent resistance is the only viable solution for me. Good luck in establishing the truth.

Convenient Timing

07.07.2005 12:56

Convenient timing? You idiot.

If you were a terrorist, going for maximum publicity, would it not occur to you to choose the middle of a summit when media coverage would be at its peak?

By the way, Pastor Jack was a famiously intolerant (some would say bigoted) Scottish Presbyterian who died of cancer last year. Better choose another nickname.

Expect more laws!

07.07.2005 16:22

I would certainly agree that there is no such thing as al Quaeda, the name never existed until it was invented by the embezzler that the FBI used as their principle witness in the Nairobi bomb case.
This is not to say that there is no threat from radical Islamists.
The real issue is not one of identity, nor even of the bombings, it is the matter of how the government will use this incident to their advantage.
I think we can look forward to ID cards coming in with minimal opposition from the HOC, added to which there will be some form of "new and improved" anti-terrorist legislation.
I would agree with the post above which recommends watching "The Power Of Nightmares", very germain to the issue and worth watching in light of the legislative oppression we may expect in the next couple of months.
