Sick BNP tries to capitalise on the London bombings

.. | 08.07.2005 10:53 | Anti-racism | Repression | Social Struggles | London | World

The British National Party is already trying to exploit yesterday's tragedy to spread racism and Islamophobia.

The BNP has responded to the London bombings with a statement on the group's website describing Islam as an "alien creed" that "breeds disaffection, hatred and violence". The organisation describes immigrants to the UK as "potential 5th columnists", claiming that the bombing fulfils a "video prophecy" the BNP made in 2004, linking "mass immigration and the prospect of terrorist attacks in our capital".

"Almost every global conflict taking place today is where this 'peaceful' religion is trying to assume or maintain influence and power.", asserts the "BNP news team".

Islam as politics

08.07.2005 11:32

If there was a political party, made of white people, who espoused the same attitudes to Jew, women, homosexuals and non-muslims as the Islamic religion does, you people would the first to be protesting outside their offices.

What?

08.07.2005 12:24

What are you going on about 'Ally Bally'. The article above is obviously against the BNP doing what it is doing. So what is your point?

If this had been done after the new 'Racial and Religious Hatred Bill' it would be a criminal offence.

It could still be classed as Racist though.

Any references to the above mentioned quotes?

Swings & Roundabouts

08.07.2005 12:24

Reading through alot of postings on here over the past 24 hours I have to say that some here are trying to capitalise on the London bombings for their own ends.

Swings and roundabouts.

Nothing stinks like the truth, Islam is not compatible with our freedoms

Lord Nelsons trousers

No organised religion is really.

08.07.2005 13:00

In my opinion, all organised religions seem to try to infringe upon freedoms and rights somewhere. It doesn't mean that we have to target a single one though.

Targetting a single religion is a strange way to do things - and always leads to trouble.

Double Standards

08.07.2005 13:45

Frederico
The BNP are loathsome. My comment was about the double standards which the hard-left applies to Islam. Islam as a religion is as intolerant of its' enemies as the BNP - but we never hear the usual suspects of the British left commenting on that.

time to get to work

i think its going to be important to make an extra effort over the next few weeks to draw people's attentions to the root causes of these attacks: fundementalists striking back in revenge for a war that served the interests of no-one but the ruling class. its absolutely right that people are pissed off but its vitally important that they should be pissed off with the REAL culprits. i'd hate to see people start lashing out blindly at muslims (and sikhs - it's happened before) while the fucking government and their puppetmasters get away with it again.

and to nelson's trews: the views of the bnp are incompatible with our freedoms too.

Muslims are not a single entity

08.07.2005 14:44

@Ally: problems with your assertion. a) you can't present the Islamic faith as a single unified doctrine with a published manifesto in the same way that you can with a political party. There are Muslims with many different backgrounds, in terms of culture and politics and there are also many different branches of Islam. b) a party very similar to that which you describe already exists, the BNP and when they, their supporters or others with similar ideologies encourage harm, or the restriction of another's rights, then protest is fine. However, unless harm, or the restriction of another's rights is being encouraged or prosecuted, in my opinion, free speech should trump all.

Trying to say all Muslims are like Al-Qaeda is like saying all Christians are like Jerry Falwell, who is also leads a racist, anti-gay, bigotted campaign. The fundamentalist Christians are a strong force behind the various crusades, oops, sorry, wars being waged at the moment. Or all Jews are like the far-right settlers, who drive Palestinians from their land, murder, loot, and don't believe the arabs worthy of life.

Why are Muslims condemned to this generalisation. You obviously don't even know any muslims, or if you do, you're obviously hanging around with Al-Mahajaroun or something. Perhaps all secular liberals should be associated with Robespierre, of French Revolution fame. All rightists associated with Hitler, all leftists associated with Stalin.

Actually, all of these people have something in common...they were the product of injustice. Hitler rose to power in a Germany crippled economically by imperial powers, Stalin rose out of the injustices in Russia, the same with Robespierre, and Bin Laden drives his strength and support from outrage at US imperialism in the middle-east. When tyrants oppress the people, the pressure builds and builds, fanaticism gains strength, and the backlash is violent and horrific in the end.

Describing these activities as 'Islamic' or Muslim would be like referring to IRA attacks as 'Catholic bombings'. And the Chief of London's police refused to do it, in fact, while Blair had no hesitation.

Of course anyone can call themselves as Muslim and quote the Koran to excuse their behaviour, just as anyone can call themselves a Christian and quote the Bible. These artificial divisions, like those of nationalism/skin colour are created by extremists - either the extremist leaders of the corporate war governments, or the extremist leaders of terrorist factions, to co-opt and divide their overwhelmingly peaceful people.

1. Who would''ve thought Oklahoma was an average white guy with a huge chip?
2. Bin Laden (with or without the CIA) had far more interest resting in the stock market on 9/11 than with his new-found religion.
3 .Don't confuse religion with cults/dogma
