Did G-8 protests cause London Bombing?

Mod Mike | 08.07.2005 21:43 | G8 2005

recently, i published a comment with this content. however, i see that it was hidden or something. i wish to put forth a view that is alternative in this space so please allow me the liberty to do so.

Given that the special forces of the UK were tied up with the G-8 protests and given that the militants knew it, I suggest that the protests contributed to the London bombing.
That is to say, the protests in Scotland diverted the necessary units from devoting attn to acts of terrorism. Therefore, the G-8 protestors are responsible for the bombings, if indirectly with the increasingly foolish protests.
The protests become increasingly foolish even if they are a carnival, a party, a place for one to stamp a passport and claim belonging, because the effect was achieved at Seattle, so that the tactics have to become more mature. If you want to end poverty in a global way, then put forth proposals to the G-8. Breaking the law, and bashing in Starbucks isn't terribly helpful these days. And it did divert the police attn so that 50 people were killed by terrorists in London.
Take responsibilty for the deaths of primarily working class Londoners, who live in comparative poverty, who fight the war in Iraq, while protestors have the luxury of cavorting and insulting the police. It doesn't mean the war in Iraq is right; it does mean that your tactics are frivolous, pointless and harmful.
Then, if you are truly democratic and independent, write of the attacks in London without a polemical bias, and write of what might not have happened if the special forces units were tied up babysitting middle class youth dressed up like carnival characters and protesting for the sake of protesting. Then, you will have an independent media.

special forces of the UK were in gleneagles and the surrounding villages towns and cities to mount an anti-terrorim operation to safeguard the world leaders - these people were not diverted to deal with any protestors.

yes there were many police sent up to gleneagles, but the anti-terror units were doing what they are supposed to do, to monitor and combat terrorism.

it's true that many police units like the forward intelligence film teams were deployed to film and gather intelligence about protestors, and that hundreds of public order officers were sent from many forces around the uk - but it is not these officers who could have prevented the awful bombings in london.

the intelligence / security services are the only ones who may have been able to prevent the bombings, and they were working at full speed ahead of the G8.

so I'm sorry what you are saying is utter rubbish.

special forces units were certainly not used to babysit "middle class youth dressed up like carnival characters".

you're miles off mate.

wake up!

Don't think so

Do you not think the foreign policy of the G8 nations have more to do with causing the bombing? Britain's involvement in the Iraq war for example?

Granted, several police were up in Scotland at the time, but they would be there regardless of protests due to the status of the men meeting at Gleneagles.

As has been reported already the Israeli secret service had some advance warning, are they in some way responsible?

I don't really know why I just wasted a minute of my time responding to this drivel really........

Londoners should not be killing Iraqis

> Take responsibilty for the deaths of primarily working class Londoners, who live in comparative poverty, who fight the war in Iraq,

Those Londoners are, together with US working class, many poor blacks, killing about 20-100 Iraqi civilians
per day (on average) EVERY DAY in Iraq since the official beginning of the invasion/occupation in March
2003:

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_conflict_in_Iraq_since_2003

Do the arithmetic: 20,000-100,000 civilians killed in two and a half years - the attack in London was like
just a regular day in Iraq, but concentrated in one city instead of a whole country.

Of course, Blair, Bush, Bill Gates, Rupert Murdoch, the market economy and Ossama bin Laden
hold as much, if not more, moral responsibility than those who directly did and do the killings.

Let's not have racism about "killing bad Iraqi civilians" and "killing good Londoners". Let's stop
all the killings and put Blair and Bush in prison and in front of a judge to answer for their crimes.

think about it

I think you're wrong

08.07.2005 23:01

Even the police themselves haven't claimed this, so I think we can safely assume that it wouldn't have made any difference.

Anyway, in what way does this count as 'news'?

oh really

08.07.2005 23:02

So the bombers were smart enough to realise that some of the police/special forces would be in Scotland rather than London and so it would be 'safe' for them to plant bombs without being caught?

AND

The police/special forces really thought that all the 'bad people' would be attacking Bush and co with banners and placards?

Perhaps you think the terrorists fund all the protesting and anarchist groups ("middle class youth dressed up like carnival characters and protesting for the sake of protesting") to create a diversion for them???????

I ate a fish and chips last night.

Unfortunately, they were fried in some cooking oil, which spilled from the fryer near the pub kitchen door, and dribbled into the alleyway that one of the bombers was using while approching the tube, who then slipped. Injured and limping, he decided to abandon his sinister mission and let his comrades complete the attacks. Had he not slipped, his bomb would have gone off killing another 58 people and injuring an additional 627. I know this because I asked George Bush who talks to God, and God told him it was so. Ironically, I happened to be one of the protestors at Edinburg who had just returned to London for work at the orphanage. Just think of it: one lone protestor saved almost 700 people, while Bush and Blair saved zero! When do I get my OBE?

big picture

08.07.2005 23:15

Just a first reaction. Whether or not there were to be protests, there would have been a massive police and intelligence operation to protect the world leaders from the people. After all thats primarily what the police were there for. Perhaps the G8 should not have met? On mass political protest has seemingly been far more effective at bringing attention to the outrageous powers that these few corporate bought world leaders have over the rest of the world, than writing letters about it. We can not get through their fences to negotiate. We have to show our force and will. Personally Im not for violence against the police, and certainly believe that local people should be respected, but I am all for tearing down the barricades that should not be there in the first place. Its symbolic power to the people and it gets noticed.

I do think that protestors really need to stick to their guns. They will be made scapegoats for what happened. But we have to fight against the real culprit, that is Bush and co's crusade for global corporate imperialism and finding real alternatives to this corporate driven planetary destruction. Even Tony Blair has said that climate change is a bigger threat to the planet than terrorism. This should be a wake up call to just what a disaster it would be if we carried on relying on fossil fuels till it has all gone.
