Mobilizing Meeting for Sept. 24-26
With Legislative Report by Amy Quinn of Institute for Policy Studies
Wednesday, July 20, 7:00 p.m. (note change from regular time)
Winston Unity Hall, 235 W. 23rd St., bet. 7th and 8th Aves.
(1, C, E, F, D, V to 23rd St.)

Organizing for Mass protests in Washington DC is off to a fast start in NYC!

On Thursday, July 7, more than 75 people met to launch the New York City organizing drive for three days of protest, slated for September 24-26 in Washington, DC. Some of those present were there as individuals and many represented grass roots organizations. Plans were discussed to reserve an initial pool of 100 buses from the NYC area. $700 was raised on the spot and a loan of $15,000 was made toward the cost of the buses. Many signed up for leafleting and to organize pick-up centers for flyers.

All of this reflected the tremendous enthusiasm that was exhibited by the meeting. In part, this energy was due to the prevailing view that a corner has been turned, with increasing public sentiment that the troops must come home from Iraq. This sentiment is influencing Capital Hill and the momentum is now with the peace movement.

At the next mobilizing meeting, on Wednesday July 20, Amy Quinn, of the Institute for Policy Studies, will lead a discussion on new anti-war developments on Capitol Hill. In preparation for the Congressional Education actions planned for September 26, we will discuss plans for NYC participation.

The September mobilization comes as years of intense anti-war organizing are beginning to pay off in the legislative realm, with almost 60 members of Congress having joined the new "Out of Iraq" Caucus and 128 members of the House of Representatives having signed on to Lynne Woolsey's call for a troop withdrawal plan. To build on this crucial new political momentum, our three-day September mobilization against the war will focus not just on the White House but also on Congress; it will include not just the major protest march on Saturday, September 24, but also, on Monday, September 26, large-scale grassroots lobbying and a mass nonviolent civil disobedience action.

If you or your group know others who have a special interest in organizing legislative pressure to end the war, please invite them to this important discussion.

Organizations are urged to send a representative to a 6:15 PM preliminary planning meeting before the general mobilization at 7PM.

The NY metropolitan organizing is critical to making this peace demonstration the biggest yet against the war. Together we can make it possible.
