IMC editing to protect its own

Once again a series of posts where the IMC moderator "ftp" or "freethepeepes" is involved are edited and / or removed because another poster uses arguments that show ftp to be wrong. This situation is simply intolerable.

I am all for IM removing the posts which do not match the editorial policy otherwise the site would be full of crap but to allow an individual the power to edit or remove posts because he is shown to be wrong is quite unaceptable.

Moderators should not be allowed to edit posts where they themselves are contributing to comments and discussions.

Disgraceful

I thoroughly agree. Such actions on the part of a moderator are quite simply disgraceful.

Get a grip !

20.07.2005 09:33

What evidence do you have "ftp / freethepeeps" is an IMC moderator ?

It hardly seems likely that an anti-semitic troll with a history of posting crude attacks on Jews to the Newswire would be accepted by the wider IM kollective as a moderator does it ?

FTP like most trolls can be annoying but they all drift away after a while - be cool and ignore him.

this can't be right

I have heard this allegation before but didn't realise it still went on. What are the rules for editing / removing comments. Although posts that break the rules can be sent to the "View All Posts" area what about the comments. Who decides, what is the policy, why can't we have an area where they are still kept ?

Astounding and unsubsunstantiated claims

20.07.2005 09:39

The editorial guidelines include "Inaccurate : posts that are inaccurate or misleading."

and the comments that were hidden were indeed inaccurate, carrying unsubstantiated claims without even a hint of proof.

Furthermore, the editorial guidelines are clear on procedure for comments:

"Comments: Everybody can add their own comments at the end of each article. Comments are subject to the guidelines for hiding. They can be used to:
State an opinion about any given posting.
Add information.
Correct inaccurate or malicious information.
Rectify misinformation.

Corrections and rectifications can be given prominent status by contacting the IMC UK features list with the qualified accurate information."

I suggest that this discussion should be taking place on the list and that it is "non news"

However, I leave that decision for someone else to make.

Very Serious

20.07.2005 10:05

I have read this line of comment with interest and it raises a number of very serious questions about the credibility of the IM Newswire.

1) The comment has been made "The editorial guidelines include "Inaccurate : posts that are inaccurate or misleading." " Who decides they are innacurate or misleading ? It seems in this case (and others) a decision was made by one individual to hide or edit comments simply because he decided they were "innacurate". As the comments concerned that individual this viewpoint can not be regarded as objective.

2) IMC editors are posting to the newswire without making clear their position within the organisation. This is just not acceptable, an individual who has the power and technical rights to edit others contributions should not be allowed to post themselves without making clear their "special" position

3) Who picks the editors ? I have yet to see evidence that "ftp" is a real IM Editor / Moderator (you choose the word) but the impression given by the above contribution seems to suggest that he is. If this is the case why are the wider collective group allowing this individual control. His views about Jews are well known and the majority of us would I feel find them offensive. If as I suspect "ftp" is just pretending to be in this position I of course apologise to all those who run the Newswire for doubting your abilities !

4) If posts are still available for viewing in the "View All Posts" area why are comments not also placed there ? Surely it is for the readership to decide what they wish to view not others.

Thanks for all the hard work for all those involved in bringing Indymedia UK to us

Sam

" His views about Jews are well known and the majority of us would I feel find them offensive."
