Gaining Respect - The Socialist Tide is Rising in Coventry

Edward Campbell | 24.07.2005 11:28 | Birmingham | London

Respect, the political party founded by a coalition of anti-war campaigners, held a public meeting in Coventry this week. The meeting displayed a measured unity that transcended socialist traditions and parties.

About 70 people of diverse ethnic backgrounds and ages, almost half women, were offered an alternative to New Labour’s policies of privatisation, war and anti-trades unionism from an equally diverse platform of four speakers.

The main speaker, Salma Yacoob, was confidently introduced as the next Respect MP to wide warm applause. She was only about 3,000 votes short of being elected MP for the Birmingham Sparkbrook and Small Heath constituency in last may's general election.

She explined the context of the Thursday evening. It was a response to the terrorist attacks in London; earlier that day the second wave of London bombing attacks had taken place. She said that the nightmare scenario had come true; and like many others, she, herself, had predicted that the war against Iraq would bring individual terrorism to the shores of the British isles.

Salma, who is a radical, voices mainstream Muslim opinion. she condemned the attacks, but stated how: “political injustice drives fundamentalist Muslims,” and described how it would take a coming together of ordinary people, including Christians, Muslims and Jews to put a stop to the escalating cycle of violence.

Making the the point that the truth had been getting through, and most people at least subconsciously knew Blair was lying, she stated the back lash against the Muslim community had been minimal. This was despite Blair’s New Labour still being in denial and relentlessly propagandisng about the reasons for the bombings. They have accepted no responsibility themselves.

Turning to the anti-war movement, which she stressed needs building, she reminded those present that there had been 13 national demonstrations. She said the British demonstrations had inspired others in the Middle East to come out and protest.

Dr Al-Zitani spoke from the platform. Originally from the world’s oldest cosmopolitan centre, Damascus , he started working as a NHS Surgeon in Coventry five years ago - which has only been a city for 600 years - and founded the “Coventry Circle”, and has been trying to make links between the cities. He described that the aim of the Circle of professional people was to promote the political engagement of the Muslim community in Coventry. This is because the majority of them don't have the confidence, status, or experience to do so. He stated the government that supported the war in Iraq can be toppled democratically.

The meeting was at the Muslim Resource Centre on Red Lane; an apt address since red not only represented the collective restrained anger against Blair’s lies and reckless support of the Iraqi War and Blair’s. It also reflected the long standing socialist and Marxist tradition in Coventry, which was combining with the socialist principles that underpinned the Islamic religion. It was stated clearly that both these traditions reject individual terrorism, but they seek to understand and explain its causes.

Dave Goodfellow, a member of Respect and the SWP, later spoke from the floor to congratulate Cllr. Dave Nellist of the Socialist Party (formerly known the Marxist Militant tendency expelled from the Labour Party in the early 1990’s) on his recent speech in the chamber of Coventry City Council about the London bombings. In it, Nellist sought to understand the motivations of the London bombers without condoning their actions. Few prominent British politicians have taken this position in public apart from Galloway. Blanket propaganda, led by Blair, that: “these evil terrorists just want to destroy western civilisation”, means that those seeking a more rational explanation are hysterically and disingenuously accused of supporting terrorism.

Dave Nellist, who was the first socialist Councillor elected in England, called for meaningful negotiations between socialists, including Respect, about organising collectively in elections. The Chair and Respect National Executive member, Farid Noor, responded by saying that he was a long-time supporter of the socialist Party in Coventry, and that informally they were already working with members of the Socialist Party to see how they could build an alternative to and maximise their challenge against New Labour in Coventry.

The Socialist Party nationally - who have had 3 councillors elected in Coventry - have declined to “Join” Respect. So too the Green Party, the dormant Socialist Alliance which was initially founded in Coventry in the aftermath of the independent election campaigns of expelled Labour MPs John Hughes and Dave Nellist. Incidentally, in 1992, Nellist was a few hundred votes shy of becoming the first British independently elected socialist MP. George Galloway, another MP expelled from the Labour MP, became Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow and achieved that historic distinction this year.

At 76 years of age Alan Wilkins spoke from the platform having represented workers since 1964, and has been a shop steward at Rolls Royce Coventry. He pointed how Blair’s new Labour betrayed Trade Unionism by not repealing the anti-trade union laws brought in by Thatcher’s governments. In fact, he added, new Labour have introduced more.

He related how many trade unionists had been victimised and lost their jobs over the years. However, it was as important today as ever to: “Fight for the right of all trade Unionists to elect their own representatives, and be represented.” This was pertinent in the case of the current Amicus convenor on the Bristol RR Test Area, Jerry Kelly, who has been employed by Rolls Royce for 30 years.

After a strike at the Bristol plant by 100 testers which successfully defended two workers from the sack, Jerry was victimised for representing them. On Wednesday all Bristol Rolls Royce workers walked out and met to decide what action they should take. Their demands are: to reinstate Jerry; Allow Jerry to address all parts of RR; and a ballot at all RR plants for industrial action.

It has been a long time since such a large and important group of workers have walked out to defend their trade union representative. Alan stated that a new generation of trades unionists in their first dispute were leading a resurgence in the power of trade unions.

Sabrina Actar at 16 represented youth at the meeting. In fact she has for three years as Coventry representative on the UK youth parliament. She stressed that young people needed to get proactive and get involved in politics, and the importance of education and information - it is power.

If Salma Yacoob were to be elected at a by-election the first radical Muslim woman MP, it would by degrees surpass the achievements of Cllr. Dave Nellist and MP George Galloway. It would continue the gains that Respect have made - apparently they gained 15 new members at this meeting.

Organised socialist parties may have been on the decline over the last twenty years but it appears they are now on their way back having recruited a new young layer of activists, and perhaps having learned lessons from their history.

Respect Socialist

24.07.2005 11:34

Surely something wrong here - Respect isn't Socialist and doesn't claim to be.
It is a heirachical organisation - and promoting them (and I'd say this article does that pretty much) is against editorial guidelines.

.

Really! You must be joking.

24.07.2005 12:39

I note that you do not have the courage, dignity or honesty to identify yourself, so your comment should be ignored. However, seems I have nothing better to I shall reply.

I am not a member or supporter of Respect, or any other hierarchical organisation or non-hierarchical organisation fot that matter.

The above is just a honest factual report of a political meeting that took place, by someone trying to report as objectively as they can. If I have made errors they were not intended, and hope they can be corrected.

It is important that information like this is spread, because it is not covered by the mainstream media because there editors and owners tend to be ideologically opposed to it.

Are you saying, like the mainstream media, that reports of grassroots political meetings that engage and reach out to minority and repressed communites, and ordinary people, should be censorsored.

Are you also saying that there shouldn't be reports on hierarchical organistions?

Eh?

"Fears of an anti-Muslim backlash have been realised in a 500-per-cent rise in faith-hate crimes in the past two weeks. More than 1,000 race and faith hate incidents have been reported to police across the country since the London bombings, though community leaders believe the actual number of incidents is at least four times higher."

24.07.2005 12:47

Respect is not a socialist group it is a muslim political party, and as such they oppose gay marriage and deffend religion, something that socialists would never do.

Yes! Minimal

24.07.2005 13:03

The backlash could so far have been potentially massive.

Inymedia Editors Sould Look at Their Editorial Guidlines Again

24.07.2005 13:32

It is inconsistant that IM editors should remove this report from the Newswire. Reports on meetings of hierarchical political party meetings, rallies and conferences including Trade Ubions are not normally pulled from the newswire.

This is an important story about left political developments in this country that the capitalist media will not cover, for obvious reasons. For the same reasons it appears IM are pulling the story. It is strange indeed that IM duty editors feel that cannot publish it.

Perhaps what we need is a more genuine non-hierarchical independent media in Britain that has the courage to publish stories that disagree with its editorial teams political ideology.

It is apparent that the independence of the editorial team of Uk Indymedia may not be independent.

What are you scared of?

24.07.2005 16:23

How extraordinary that a report of a Respect meeting, by a non-member of that organisation should be blanked by Indymedia in exactly the same way that the Independent and Guardian attempt to keep Respect out of the media.(Except when, as in the case of Galloway and Yaqoob's recent astounding election results they are forced to.)

Even more extraordinary is the parroting of the Toynbee, Cohen, Aaronovitch line that Respect is not Socialist by a number of people on this board.

That the Respect platform in Coventry contained a community activist, a member of the Yuth Parliament, a respected Trade Unionist and Salma Yaqoob is testament to the extraordinary coalition we have built. This was reflected in the audience which contained a number of active Trade Unionists(with Union positions), a renowned peace campaigner (one of the founders of Medical Aid for Vietnam), school students, active socialists from a number of organisations, and a good representation of the local Muslim Community.

Those who criticise Respect for not being 'socialist', or for being 'anti-abortion' or 'anti-gay' really should read Respect's manifesto, rather than falling for the disinformation peddled by Blairite apologists who still pretend to be on the left.

Your post appears to breach the editorial guidelines as well.

I'm sure you'd be delighted if the IMC newswire was chock full of 'objective' accounts of every single RESPECT meeting in the country.

But then it would be a notice board for a hierarchical party, wouldn't it?

Why don't you post the account on the RESPECT parties website, so that people who want to know about RESPECT can go and read it there?

Indendendent Media - remove your blinkers!

24.07.2005 20:08

This is meant to be independent media where political stories get published. I am not a member of Respect so I would not use their party news board.

I am not trying to promote Respect. Why should I do that? Again, it is just a factual account of a meeting. An important Public meeting of socialists, Trade Unionists, and community workers, hosted by Respect. It wasn't a party political meeting as such.

It really is to the shame of some of the IM UK collective that they have pulled the story. They have really lost the plot, from a position of weakness and ideological confusion.

Again I will self-censor the article and remove anything that paints Respect in a positive light.
Am I allowed to say they got 15 new members that night. Is that promoting them? Can you see that my position is difficult, because the guidelines to not tell me exactly what is allowed and not.

But i will put myself in your position and make relative judgements about what is allowed and not.

Can you not see that you are backing into a Ghetto. It may be that you make this decision confident that IM is viewed by many, at an all time high. So that power enables you to be more censorious. But it is because of stories the likes of me writes that have made IM worth looking at. You may be at the beginning of a degeneration of your political base, and a decline in your viewing figures. By alienating the likes of me will accelerate that process.

I have supported IM (blindly at times) over the years, and was one of the few calling for such independent media internationally in the late 1990's. You probably would have a job if it wasn't for me.

Perhaps you need to show a little more common sense and respect IM UK editorial team, instead of splattering my article with disingenuously anonymous comments. You have only done damage to yourselves.

Politics will happen and people will do things out there regardless of IM, and whether or not they are reported by IM.

But what on earth has happened to the principle of getting across the truth: information that the capitalist media will not publish, because it is against its own interests. You are doing exactly the same thing but are blind to it.
