QUEEN me up Scotty — Star Trek actor George Takei has boldly come out to reveal he is gay.
The star, who played Starship Enterprise’s helmsman Hikaru Sulu, has materialised out of the closet in an interview for a gay mag.

Takei, 68, has been with his partner Brad Altman for 18 years.

And he is considering going forth into the final frontier of gay marriage.

American-born Takei, who went to school at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford, said: “The world has changed from when I was a young teen feeling ashamed for being gay.

“The issue of gay marriage is now a political issue. That would have been unthinkable when I was young.”

Mixed crew ... Takei with his mates on the Starship Enterprise

Takei, who steered the Starship Enterprise through the classic TV series and six spin-off movies, admitted he is gay in Los Angeles magazine Frontiers.

And the actor, currently starring in a theatre production of Equus in Los Angeles, said his family had struggled to accept his homosexuality.

He said: “You know, I’ve not had a good experience with one sibling.

“And I won’t be specific because it’s still a problem.

“My mother, initially, had some adjustments to make, but she got to like Brad very much.”

Takei said his new stage role as a psychologist in Equus helped inspire him to discuss his sexuality.

And he blasted California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for refusing to make gay marriage legal.

Takei said: “Schwarzenegger is like some of those duplicitous politicians who would say one thing and yet maintain segregation in the South.

“That’s what he’s doing here. It’s against basic decency and what American values stand for.”

He added that he hoped that gay Americans would one day overcome opposition from “arch-reactionary conservatives”.

Takei said: “The Bible-thumping religiosos are not the holders of the truth, and yet they are the ones who want to impose their truth.

“But for them to impose that on the rest of society, the rest of America, I think, is every bit as corrupt as the segregationists were in the past.”

THE Sun has shown considerable restraint with its headlines on this story. Let’s hear your suggestions (printable, of course)

This is fucking disgusting. Maybe some direct action against Emily Smith and The Sun would be in order.
