It was beautiful

saturday club | 20.12.2005 14:33 | Gender | Globalisation | Health

saturday club got together during dosummats anti over consumption month to say you cant buy beauty...

You can’t buy beauty.

We wanted to do a positive action, one that made people think without making them feel bad about themselves or angry towards us for blaming them. So instead of just sabotaging L’Oreal or telling people what was bad about them we decided to make people feel good without the use of makeovers or L’Oreal’s unethical and harmful products.

We went out into the street, outside Boots where they sell not only L’Oreal but hundreds of other unethical beauty products. We gave out stickers saying ‘I don’t need a makeover because I am beautiful’, we had pieces of paper that said ‘I don’t need a makeover because…’ and asked people to fill in their own reasons. We also gave out alternative, natural beauty tips and recipes and leaflets explaining why L’Oreal isn’t worth it.

We also made stickers to put onto L’Oreal’s products warning people about the harmful chemicals they contain, and their unethical behaviour. These were put onto their shampoo, makeup and anti-ageing cream packaging in the shop.

The response was amazing, everyone seemed really cheered up by the whole thing, asking for more stickers for their friends and filling in the paper with comments like (I don’t need a makeover because…) ‘I am happy with who I am’ and ‘I am worth more than L’Oreal’. We brought a smile to people’s faces where L’Oreal bring only low self-esteem, harmful chemicals and unethical practices.

I can't help but feel this protest would have a tad more legitimacy were the girls in the photo not kitted out in the latest "alternative" fashions and liberally doused in (undoubtedly eco-friendly, organic, and fairly traded) makeup.

just saying, like.

Kick arse, it's great to hear that the action was a success! Upping confidence is the first step towards weening them off consumerism, nice one!

The four girls pictured are beautiful. they don't need much help from cosmetics yet. In 20 years these girls will use anything and everything to make themselves look younger and prettier. If you don't believe me, keep in touch with them and check.

Do say: I'm sure your activity really made a big impact.

Don't say: You just wanted to get your photos on Indymedia, didn't you?

Do say: Your mum's so cool for letting you get a piercing.

Don't say: It doesn't look quite so cool when it gets all scabby does it?

Do say: Nirvana were quite a good band in their day.

Don't say: You were probably only 5 years old when Kurt blew his brains out.

Do say: We need to oppose all this consumerism.

Don't say: That i-pod you got for Christmas is really cool.

Anyone for McDonalds?

Do nuffin

just noticing you are all judging how good the girls look..the whole day was to tell people that we are more than what we look..so fuck off judging the girls we happened to take a photo of. they were just the ones around when i had the camera out. the grannies and granddads and tiny little children and everyone took stickers and wrote stuff not just these girls, who were by the way real nice and didnt just sit at a computer moaning, they were lovely and cheerful..

During the summer term last year, some of the girls in my year (Year 10) gave me a treat in the toilets! Here are some of the pictures. It was quite humiliating but I enjoyed it!

Maybe I'll come up to Manchester one weekend and we could all meet up.

We could go for a Critical Mass bike ride on the Friday and have lots of lovely vegan grub.

Then we could do a stall on Saturday daytime for a campaign.

Saturday night would be the best when I could give you all gentle massages with baby oil, and tickle and tease and pleasure you all.

And then we could just chill on Sunday!

John and his schoolfriends
