Greanpeace drop dead

whale | 19.01.2006 15:31 | Ecology

The anti-whaling wars moved to europe today...

Greanpeace volunteers dumped the body of a dead whale outside the Japanese embassy in Berlin today. The dead fin whale measuring 17m (56ft) long and almost 20 tonnes had been transported to Berlin from the Baltic coast where it had died in a beaching incident on a sandbank.

The message to the press was that Japan has no need to kill whales for research because cadavers can be found and measured instead. Of course Japan wouldn't do that because it's co-called scientific research is just a cop-out designed to let them continue commercial whaling despite a worldwide ban.

In 1986 the International Whaling Commission imposed a moratorium on commercial whaling, but Japan resumed hunting the following year by claiming to be whaling for scientific purposes. During the first four months of 2006 they are expected to kill 935 minke whales in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary and those whales end up on restaurant tables and sushi bars in Japan.

Greenpeace hung a banner at the whale drop reading, "Science doesn't need harpoons! Stop the senseless whaling!"

European arrogance?

19.01.2006 17:03

interesting action but Im dissapointed that this is another instance [in a very very long series] of European arrogance towards an Asian nation, by the 5th form bullies, Greepeace.

Freddie, in what sense arrogant? I'm not suggesting you're wrong as I don't know enough about the issue. I'm just curious.

Freddie

A nice try at avoiding the issue by trying to embarrass middle class sensibilities.

This isn't about 'arrogant europeans' imposing their will over others.

To bring race into such a discussion is about as low as Whale shit.

European arrogance

21.01.2006 11:00

To Moab -
I think it should be recognised that the likes of Greenpeace are borne out of European arrogance in an attempt to change the world. That is not to say that they are bad.
It does take a certain amount of arrogance to believe that such change is possible and that a specific view is universally correct, and it is no accident that most of the larger, older global campaigning organisations started in the west - it is paternalism.
However it is also to be recognised that they do an excellent job and that they win arguments using logic and evidence unlike the unacceptable, imperialist side of that european arrogance which uses force to win its claims.

European Arrogance?

21.01.2006 15:19

So in the days when Asian Greenpeace volunteers were taking part in actions against Iceland's whaling, was that asian arrogance towards Europeans? Or could you just be manufacturing an entirely spurious argument??

ACORDA BRASIL ACORDA!!
