Drivers can expect delays on the M1 motorway in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire when widening work begins on a ten mile stretch in two weeks time.
The date of the much talked about widening which will have a lane exclusively for vehicles with more than two occupants in peak hours, has been revealed by roads minister Stephen Ladyman. He has stated that work on the stretch between junction 6A at Bricket Wood, Herts; and junction 10 at Luton, Beds, will commence on Monday March 20th.
The minister said: "All users of the M1, whether they're business or leisure travellers, hauliers or airport traffic, will benefit from the extra lanes we're adding to this busy section of the road. More than 160.000 vehicles a day use this stretch of motorway, making it one of the busiest.
"Widening will improve safety and reduce congestion, and demonstrates the Government's committment to delivering a motorway network for the future. To cut congestion even further, once widening is completed, this part of the M1 will carry a car pool lane. a dedicated lane for vehicles carrying two or more people during peak hours."
Throughout the work, a 40mph speed limit will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week, enforced with speed cameras. Perparation work began last November which included fencing, site clearance, setting up offices and installing temporary CCTV cameras to help locate breakdowns.
Condition checks, after the work starts, will be able to be made by drivers intending to use that section of the M1. The Highways Agency says that there will be a dedicated section
