Greenpeace target 4 x 4s in Cambridge

jim jay | 11.03.2006 17:35 | Ecology | Cambridge

Greenpeace activists today targetted gas guzzling 4 x 4's as part of their campaign to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmental campaigners today took to the streets armed with fake parking tickets and wheel clamps on the look out for anti-social 4x4s in order to highlight the heavy environmental impact of these vehicles.

By 'clamping' and 'ticketing' 4x4s Greenpeace were asking people to think again with their choice of car and consider less harmful options. Greenpeace are calling for increased taxes on these gas guzzlers to promote fuel efficiency.

Why GreenPeace wants to raise awareness on this issue
..................................................................

Last year a conference of over 200 of the world's top climate scientists concluded that we have about five years left to take meaningful action to reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses if catastrophic damage to the world's climate is to be avoided. One year has passed and still there has been no significant moves to curb emissions. This is why Greenpeace would like you to pressure the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, asking him to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport in the forthcoming budget.

Research shows that greenhouse gasses from transport could be reduced by around 30% if buyers purchased the most fuel efficient cars in each category (e.g. the most efficient mini, family saloon or executive car depending on what type of car the buyer wants). And the biggest gain would come in the large car brackets. This is why Greenpeace has been campaigning for over a year for a new road tax band for gas guzzlers and a big increase in the amount of tax they pay. It would help shift buying habits towards more fuel efficient vehicles and help reduce the impact of cars on the climate.

Please write to or email the Chancellor asking him to announce a new road tax band for gas guzzling cars in the Budget on March 22nd. Go to  http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/ved for more details and to send an email to the Chancellor.

Nice site.

I agree with you- 4x4s are too big to use in the city.
Actually, I think you should ban all vehicles with engine greater than 150cc to enter the city.
Landrovers are made for offroad.

Get a Job

19.01.2007 14:22

Why don't you work shy sandal wearers get a job or do somethong useful with your lives? You'd certainly regret it if you ever thought about touching my car you horrible little peoople. We live in a free country and if people want to drive a 4x4 into Cambridge then what's it got to do with you? If you got a job you might even be afford one! If your worries about climate change then why don't you try and stop cows farting instead?

Available for work?

19.01.2007 14:22

Is the hottie on the end, in the sack-cloth dress, available for private hire?

I'm in need of a cleaner (problems with my last one, its a long story). I'd be willing to make a substantial contribution to your cause.

Importance of design

19.01.2007 14:30

When we were designing the F1 weight reduction was our priority. Thats why we fitted a 6.1 litre V12 power plant. Its was the only way to go stupidly fast without the addition of a turbocharger.

This makes the F1 a very economical car and I only wish more manufacturers followed our example.

I think they have the wrong idea,

19.01.2007 14:48

What gives these 'activists' the right to tamper with private property? If any of those greenpeace stickers damage the cars who's going to pay for the repairs? Them? Hardly! They look like university students.

You do realise that not every 4x4 looks like a Discovery yes? Their is a Fiat Panda 4x4, Subaru's in all of their different forms are four wheel drive... are you seriously going to tell me that a Panda has the same emissions as a 4.3L engine? Be serious.

Climate change is a natural thing, welcome to living on a planet. If you don't like the weather perhaps you should seriously consider turning the giant ball of burning gas that hangs in the sky down a notch or two? It IS the main driver of climate on this planet, us humans are doing diddly squat.

Harrah!

19.01.2007 14:49

Many thanks to you decent folk for bringing this ugly business to my attention. I drive a 1yr old Diesel Discovery on my farm (probably far more harmful than your 15yr old Kombis but I dont suppose you bother to look those up in your handbook) and have occasion to bring it into town on business sometimes.

Since you helpfully pointed out that my 4x4 has no place in town (I take it you will be targetting Audis and Subarus aswell as you included the Freelander?) I have concluded that the only right and proper thing to do, is go and buy myself a "town car". I have since put down a deposit on a nice new BMW 330ci, (not a 4x4 so I know you will be agreement with my choice) Now, instead of having one diesel car for all my needs, I have 2 cars which will see less use individually. I trust you will disregard any emissions that were...emitted when manufacturing my new car, as I know you will understand that it really is absolutely vital if Im to keep the Discovery out of town.

Thanks again! If everyone in Britain went out and bought another car for each of their needs, it would indeed be a much better place!

BTW, I have a number of jobs going at my farm for ambitious, hard working youngsters that would like to get out of eternal "education" and contribute to the economy. Please let me know if you see any.

Kind Regards,

What idiocy!

19.01.2007 15:08

Why don't you lot get your facts right and stop picking on SUVs. Not all of them are 'gas guuzzlers' and at the end of the day the low emission hybrid vehicles I'm sure you'd rather we all drive actually cause more environmental problems than SUVs.

You lot will never save the planet by wasting your time trying to get rid of SUVs - there are bigger and more serious environmental issues out there.

Pricks.

Morons

19.01.2007 18:33

If I saw an unwashed scruffy article such as those pictured touching my car in anyway id forcibly put said ticket up their unwashed backsides. This is a democracy and as such we have a right to buy whatever we want. That freelander that they ticketed has a smaller footprint and creayes less co2 than a mondeo (2wd) Do they not realise this? Oh I forgot theres a bandwagon for them to jump on so theyre quite happy. Doing some research would be too much for these people who are happy to be brainwashed into thinking anything they cant afford must be bad. Morons

Stupid or Misguided

01.05.2008 05:22

These people are either stupid or misguided, I drive a 4x4 which I need for social activities and because of where I live, but also use when going into town, if I see anyone trying to put their stickers on my car they will be forceable ejected from the vicinity of my car.

Do they not realise that some people have a genuine need for a 4x4, and even if they are only wanted and not needed what business is it of anyone else what other people drive ?

Do we really want to be dictated to, to be told what we can drive ? Not in any country I would wish to live in.

Make a difference to the planet!

01.05.2008 07:15

Come on guys, it's not too late to change your ways and help improve the planet. You can make a difference!

Start by getting a haircut, and having a wash. I'm sure you will be able to find gainful employment and be able to start putting something back into society, rather than just holding everyone else back.

Cheers,

FT.
