Protest to be held at Air Weapons Integration Conference in London

- | 13.03.2006 23:15 | Anti-militarism | London

On the 30th and 31st March EDO MBM, along with their buddies Raytheon RSL, are holding a conference on death and destruction at the Selfridge Hotel, Oxford St. Top of the agenda will be Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles (UAVS). UAVs are unmanned bombing machines, the US army recently killed scores of civilians with one in Pakistan—another victory in the War on Terror!

We will be demonstrating from 5.30pm at the Selfridge Hotel on Oxford Street as the delegates leave...

You might also be interested to know that delegates get discount accomodation at the Thistle Hotel in Marble Arch, ain't that nice..

Bring banners, noise and anger...

more info at 07891405923,  smashedo@hotmail.com transport to be organised from Brighton.

The conference is going on for two days, if anyone has any creative ideas let us know

The conference programme can be found at www.sae-uk.org/news/air.pdf. It's only 1200 quid to get in.

Although SOME UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) not Uninhabited have been retro fitted with missiles the vast majority have no armament for the simple reason of weight. They are primarily observation vehicles using IR, Radar, Video etc to observe the enemy. Their design called for them to circle potential targets (loiter in mil parlance) and send intel back to the C&C unit.

UAV's are also starting to be used by people like the Forrestry Commision, The National Grid, the Dept of the Environment as a low cost, low environmental impact way of earth observation so don't assume only the boys in green use them. The Israeli company Elbit Systems Ltd recently sold some of its Skylark hand-launched UAV to the Australian government for use in observing tidal flow and river paths.

Protest at this event if you want but there are some 20 or 30 events like this every month with far more important items to be concerned about. For example after a brief Google search:

Asymetric Warfare: Counter Insurgency Tactics
Small Arms - Future Lightweight Developments
The Main Battle Tank - Lessons from Israel
Precision Guided Weapons - Minimising Collateral Damage

Typical reaction

Looks like "anon" broke one of the IM thought police cardinal rules by pointing out a few facts about how a protest could be better directed. Anon should know that all protests on IM are wonderful, inspiring, run with the full support of local people etc etc.

The fact that many, like this one are ill thought out, ineffective, poorly targeted and in some cases just a plain waste of everyones's time is never admitted. Never mind I expect the three of four "protestors" will have a nice day out, get to do a bit of shouting, maybe bang a drum and afterwards retire with the exciting glow of righteous indignation keeping them warm on the train home.
