+++FRANCE: protests in 170 cities - riots - unions call for GENERAL STRIKE+++

1.5 million people demonstrated in more than 170 cities and towns on saturday against the french government and its job market "deregulation" plans CPE. Many of the demonstartions ended in massive clashes with the police. About 70 of the 84 french universities are on strike and /or occupied by students. Also schools are occupied by teachers and pupils. The unions said if the government won´t take back CPE till tomorrow they will call for a GENERAL STRIKE in France.
380'000 people in Paris, 130'000 in Marseille, 45'000 in Lille, 45'000 in Nantes, 30'000 in Rennes, 25'000 in Lyon. And so on... riots daily all over France..
pupils attacked police stations in Marseille, in Toulouse states´buildings were occupied last week... thousands of pupils blocked 25 trains in a station...and so on....

Many more youth groups than just the students attended the demo. Also present was the working class and Algerian young of Paris both of whom have an axe to grind with the authorities. The CRS riot police kept their distance from the demo letting the marchers complete their route un-harassed until the end. At this point they made confrontation inevitable by blocking all routes away from the finish with tooled up riot squad.
If the authorities thought that the anger felt by the disenfranchised youth of Paris was dissipated by last year’s riots, they were sorely mistaken. The unemployed, Algerians and students who fought back against provocative and unnecessary repression at the end of the march had a rage that was deep seated.

Everyone in Perth who has seen David Bradbury’s compelling documentary Blowin’ in the Wind is asking "Are US and Australian forces test firing Depleted Uranium weapons at the Lancelin bombing range?..."
In the film US ambassador Tom Schaffer says: "Well, I think the DU issue is really a bogus issue…Whatever we do with Australia we’re doing with the concurrence of the Australian government and the environmental laws and what not that have to be observed here and I just don’t think that that is a real issue that will present a problem to us in the future."

Stage of Engagement a Huge Success
Maritimes IMC March 19th, 2006
On Saturday, March 18th, to mark the 3rd Anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq, artists, speakers, and peace activists congregated in Victoria Park to say "No" to the ongoing illegal occupation of Iraq and Coalition forces military involvement.
The Stop the War Machine Stage of Engagement, organized by the Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NSPIRG), featured such popular entertainers as monolithic hip-hop performer Michael Franti of Spearhead. Local acts I.M.F. and the Sound and the Fury also performed.
