Video about the NAIL campaign

notts imc | 28.03.2006 18:34 | Ecology | Health | Social Struggles | Technology

This short video voices the views of Nottingham residents about the Eastcroft Incinerator and the plans to expand the facilities. The three incinerators on the site burn most of Nottingham's household waste - including recyclable materials. They also incinerate industrial waste including reject cigarettes, plastics, chemicals, tyres, PVC, animal tissues etc. On the site there is also a clinical waste incinerator that burns hospital waste including low-level radioactive waste.

There are two versions of the video uploaded. One is a screening quality version (in MPEG4 format) and the other is a version you can play and share on video capable mobile phones.

Please not that there is about 20 seconds of silence at the beginning before the film starts.

The video will shortly be available, along with many others, on the first issue of the IMC-UK-VIDEO DVD Newsreal. Watch for news about where to get your copy.

The Eastcroft municipal incinerator currently burns 150,000 tonnes pa. but the operator plans to expand this by a further 100,000 tonnes pa. This will mean that they will be importing more household and industrial waste into the city to pollute the air, along with the additional transport required. Some of the heat generated by the burning process is used to heat water into steam which is puchased by EnviroEnergy, a company owned by the city council which is subsidised by council tax payers. Enviroenergy sell the heat to homes in St. Ann’s to Nottingham Trent University and businesses in the city, including Victoria Centre and the new TAX office. They brand their product as Nottingham Green Energy, and claim it saves us money, helps the environment by saving finite supplies of fossil fuels and by using less land for landfill sites. However, what they don’t tell you is that the company is losing over £ millions of tax Nottingham council taxpayers money and that if the waste were recyclable and not incinerated, far more fossil fuels would be saved. They also don't mention that replacing all this burnt paper, cardboard, glass etc from raw materials uses massive amounts of energy, far more than recovered from incineration. Additionally the waste still has to be sent to landfill, some of which is classified as toxic waste once it has been through the incineration process. Far from being green energy, the plants pollutes the air and land with global-warming and acid rain gases, toxic heavy metals and dioxins and PCB’s See also http://www.nail.uk.net/ http://www.no-incinerator.org.uk/contacts.html
